He's carefully crafted a "shtick", a public persona like other entertainers. He appeals to a certain group of people and says things people are thinking but won't say themselves, the more outrageous, the better. AND he makes good money doing it.

He's just one of the three stooges of the far right, entertaining to some who like that kind of thing. Pretense at being a news commentator, a'la Jerrry Springer style.

Yea kinda like Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews.

You have nailed it, NDNdancer. It's nothing more than a sctick, which unfortunately, seems to be a part of our television news. I can't help but wonder if it's the audience that has dumbed down and the news caters to the lower demands, or if it's the delivered news that has made us more stupid. In any event, all of the "entertainment" news sucks.

Colbert is on the Comedy Network, so he's hiding under no pretense. If anyone cannot see that his show is completely tongue-in-cheek, then they are a moron.

Olberman, is a different story though. I am not a fan. He's part of our misinformation ills, along with Beck, O'Reilly, et al.

Re: How Crazy Is Glenn Beck?

I only ever saw Glen Beck's show, when he was at CNN Headline News and only a few times. I've not heard his radio show, nor seen his show since his move to Fox.

From what I saw at CNNHN, he never came off as shrill. Prehaps a bit whiny at times, but he seldom exuded any of the arrogance and condescension that other political commentators do on a daily basis. I remember him having Ron Paul on his show, exclusively, during the campaign for an interview. I wasn't a Paul fan, but I was dismayed by how his was dismissed by all the other media outlets, even those slanted right. Glen Beck gave him a fair chance, and a fair interview that allowed Paul to expand upon his platform and clear up some misconceptions regarding his campaign.
Beck never wowed me into becoming a fan, but I don't know if he is to blame since no political commentator has made me a fan, at least not on the national scene.
Whatever antics he displays on TV, Glen Beck seems like the kind of guy I'd happily have as a neighbor, so no I do not think he's crazy.

Re: How Crazy Is Glenn Beck?

Glenn Beck is just the extreme example of what has gone wrong with journalism and news in today's world. I am really kicking myself for losing this link, but I read a few weeks back an excellent essay someone wrote on this whole subject that include the likes of Beck. The problem with Beck is that he has taken the blending of important issues and turned them into tabloid news. Could anyone ever imagine if Edward R. Murrow, or a young Walter Cronkite, came out of college that most likely they would be unemployed.

For me Glen Beck illustrates the importance of our print media that has taken such beating of late. These yokels not only seek to NOT inform their audience, but worse to actually leave their audience LESS informed than when they began watching. In the same amount of time it takes to watch one of these idiot shows I can have read both the NY Times and Washington Post and be infinitely more informed than even the host on his chosen subject of the day. But then again, they really are not in the business of being informed, but rather the business of selling ad space. And the crazier Beck gets the better for the stock price.

    Great post.

If you can find the link to that article, I would so love to read it.
