I live in the so called "Ghetto" people are poor for a reason! They make themselves poor by getting pregnant, smoking dope, selling dope. I mean come on there are always going to be the poor and the rich nothing can change that. The only way to help people is to cut them off and let them make there way in life on there own. * survival of the fittest.
This would be a separate debate ..why are there poor people .. ??
The reasons you give are caused by poverty; but intolerance, hatred, fear cause the poverty.....and some people are not strong enough to overcome this...

Do you think these people, or any people wish to live as they do ??
Has anyone , in the history of man, ever bothered to ask this question, AND listened to the answer ???

Survival of the fittest ... pertains primarily to animals, not humans....of course, there is an effect...

Oh Jesus ****ing Christ.

Lets not blame the poor people because they are poor, lets vilanize everyone else for them getting poor instead.

It IS possible to overcome being poor, you have to want it. Nobody is going to give it to you, and taking it (robbery) doesn't work so well. So much for the rappers attitude.

Again ...Have you even been poor ?
I have not, so trying to empathize is impossible..

Villanizing others is not so off the mark as you may think.

Did we, or did we not use slave labor ?
Did we or did we not steal the land from the natives ?
Do we or do we not practice racism and intolerance toward dark skinned minorities ?
I know that we did....
BTW , I hate the rap noise...and the "native Negro" so-called music.
I think the "poor people" problem can be solved, but it will take thinking and re-thinking...and an attitude change...

Maybe you did, but I had nothing to do with any of that ****. See, I'm under 200 years old.

And even if you want to argue that the sins of the father are passed down seven generations, my ancestors didn't get to this country until the 1910's, where they were (coincidentally) discriminated against and actually poor, not this "40 inch flat screen and two cars-poor" that you see nowadays.

I think the "poor people" problem can be solved, but it will take thinking and re-thinking...and an attitude change...

Yes, because no other ethnic/cultural/social group ever made something of themselves without the other groups stopping and thinking of how best to integrate them into society and change their own attitudes.

Again ...Have you even been poor ?
Yep, I was poor once. In a sense I still am even if im not as poor as someone who can't afford a cheap 50 dollar phone. I made myself NOT poor by making the right choices at that pivotal time in everyones life that decides how the rest of their life will turn out. 18 years old.

Villanizing others is not so off the mark as you may think.
Yes. Yes it is. I have seen a poor black kid from a poor neighborhood get accepted into Harvard University because he worked hard and stayed out of trouble, because he had goals in life. Good parenting helps, but its even possible without good parenting as long as the individual is ambitious.

Did we, or did we not use slave labor ?
Yes, we did, over 150 years ago. So what?

Did we or did we not steal the land from the natives ?
Yes, we did, nearly 400 years ago. So what?

Do we or do we not practice racism and intolerance toward dark skinned minorities ?
No. Check the Office of the President of the United States of America.

I know that we did....
Did yes, Do? No.

I think the "poor people" problem can be solved, but it will take thinking and re-thinking...and an attitude change...
Yes, its called giving people a reason to be ambitious and removing this entitlement mentality. That will only happen by removing entitlement programs such as this one.

If I am poor and thus entitled to something from the government, what is my motivation to go out and earn it? Where does my ambition come from?

Maybe you did, but I had nothing to do with any of that ****. See, I'm under 200 years old.
:rofl

Hillarious. I went into a woman's home who lived in public housing assistance (projects) one time and she had a 40 inch flat screen and her vehicle was the 2007 Buick parked out front. She also had more decorations and fancy wall displayed china stuff Ive seen in any wealthy persons home, even if it did look tacky.

Yes, because no other ethnic/cultural/social group ever made something of themselves without the other groups stopping and thinking of how best to integrate them into society and change their own attitudes.
Well said sir, well said.

Is this something the government should be subsidizing? Is this something our tax dollars should go to?

No the government shouldn't be buying cellphones for citizens.

Will people take advantage of this like some do every other government program?

Of course.

That's one of the funny things about people that live in the projects, they all have cable tv, cars (a lot of them with rims), the latest electronics and a humongous fat ass.

Villanizing others is not so off the mark as you may think.

Of course not.

The poor people don't sit around saying, "I'm a lazy dumb****, that's why I'm poor." Such honesty isn't a human trait. No, they have to blame someone, and politicians from Jesse Jackson to the Messiah have made great progress for themselves by exploiting this.

Did we, or did we not use slave labor ?

Are any of today's poor former slaves, or current slaves?

No.

Therefore, they can't blame slavery.

Did we or did we not steal the land from the natives ?

No.

For the most part, it was a cultural misunderstanding. Also, those "natives" (Gee, I'm a native American, too, I was born in the United States, unlike the President) would not have steel, let along cars made of steel, if it wasn't for the new comers. You ever try to kill a buffalo with just a sharp rock, some twigs, and a string?

Do we or do we not practice racism and intolerance toward dark skinned minorities ?

I do not, you have to speak for yourself.

I think the "poor people" problem can be solved, but it will take thinking and re-thinking...and an attitude change...

Sure can.

First thing they have to do is stand in front of the mirror, point at the person directly facing them, and say, "you be a lazy dumb****, that's why yo po."

Next thing they have to do is beat the crap out of their kids who skip school, bring home bad grades, and otherwise imitate their useless parents.

Those two steps would go a long long way in ending the cycle of poverty.

I always used to think this was the case when I was younger. Then, when you're at school, all your professors tell you about how that's just a myth created by the Republicans, how poor people actually don't live like that, how it's a stereotype borne out of prejudice, etc. You hear that enough and you actually start to believe it.

Then you get out into the real world and work at a job that brings you into contact with these actual people and gives you an absolute and perfect inventory of their income, bank statements, properties, expenditures, cars, etc. And lo and behold, you find out that the vast majority of them spend their money on the dumbest ****.

I can't tell you how many deadbeat dads I've heard complain about how they can't make their $125/week child support, yet they

1) Own houses in FL/AZ,
2) Earn >$60k year under the table, or
3) Have >2 cars that cost more than $25k

It's ****ing insane.

Alot of time not wanting to pay child support is a way of showing opposition to the spouse, exgirlfriend, "baby momma", or whatever.

YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most people settle for smoking crack and getting high off government money!!!

People in cities vote for primary what type of party??
Democratic why?? They represent the poor and feed into the poor lifestyle.

Politically aware people should not ask such insane questions.

Going house hunting up here in the DC Metro Area made me realize the truth of these stereotypes sometimes. A few actually. Two of the past townhouses I went to (I only make around $40k up here which, back where I'm from would be nice and comfortable, up here is a bit on the low side) had literally 2 to 3 families living in them. Both houses seem a bit ran down, the cars outside were older, a number of the things in the house looked older and poor quality....yet both had at least 2 big screens in the house. It just kind of left me scratching my head a bit because they were SO out of place with the rest of the house.

The only example that I can think of, in which government might be justified in providing cell phones is in the case of victims of domestic violence, with a substantial risk of ongoing harm, who might need access to a phone for emergency services. And the phone should call the police and no one else.

If this hasn't been mentioned before, all cell phones (even without service plans) can call 911. My father has avoided a cell phone for many years despite his company offers to pay for it and frequent business travel. He still keeps my mothers old phone charged in the car in case of emergency.
