How would you define hunger, whether it is "world hunger" or even your own "personal hunger?"

Hunger is that thing I cease to feel after the fourth piece of pizza.

I think you're confusing hunger and starvation. Fat people are often hungry, but rarely starve.

It's also a grotesquely overused term in American politics, since we are told that people who are obviously in no danger whatsoever of starvation are "going to bed hungry."

Hunger is what's killing millions of people around the world due to corruption in governments, which causes the redistribution of needed food. Warlords in Africa for example.

Starvation is the extreme hunger, which can kill.

Your sentiment is probably correct, although your numbers may be somewhat inflated.

For the sake of accuracy though, the people you mention are dying of starvation and malnutrition, and their complications, such as disease.

Hunger is more of a subjective state. Often the truly starving reach a point where they where they experience no hunger, or so I'm told.

Hunger is what inspires me to get off my lazy ass and scrounge up a sandwich. (Hence the vote for "personal motivator")

I'm to lazy to be motivated. I just sit there getting skinny 'till the missus shoves some food in my gob.

Hunger is the feeling one has when they want to eat.
Again we run into the vagaries of language and the Human Condition here as well.

For there is another related term: appetite.

One probably cannot be said to be experiencing hunger, say in the afterglow of a splendid meal at a good restaurant, when the waitress, that heartless temptress, sashays over to your table with a desert menu.

The person in this case with sudden urge to force down a chocolate brownie alamode smothered in brandy sauce certainly wants to eat, but it is probably appetite at work as opposed to hunger.
