The only hard part was making sure the modem dial up noise didn't wake the dog, but thankfully, that's no longer an issue.

Then there's the issue of non-home computers, friends iphones, etc. Hoo boy.

Yeah, there's always the risk of non-home computers. We do the best we can and hope like hell it's enough

As to the sneaking online during the night, God I hope not. In our case it's less likely because I have insomnia often, but there's obviously never any guarantee there.

I think I was 10yrs old when I read in the Guardian that D H Lawrence's book Lady Chatterley's had been banned and the publishers prosecuted under the obscenity laws.(not guilty)

I asked my Dad his stance, he gave me the book and said form your own conclusions.

I did, censorship is wrong, parents if they are parents should be able to assist their child to be educated enough to make their own dicision.

The "basement" I would pobably object on the ground that my daughter at 13yrs would be exposed to the fact that some adults still love to live in the junior school playground.

    I am one

I visited forums much like this one to debate politics starting from when I was 12. I think being exposed to both sides of the political spectrum is the best way for kids to learn about politics. In real life, you mostly end up learning about politics from only one viewpoint, which tends to be quite biased.

A good example of your point is a young man who posted in the "truth and dangers of Homosexuality" he would definitely have benefited from a place like this 6 or 7 yrs ago

There's nothing that happens on here that I would worry about my (hypothetical) 13 year old reading about, not even the Basement or Sex and Sexuality. More than a few things talked about there I wouldn't want him or her doing, but nothing I wouldn't want him or her reading about. I was reading Heinlein and Lovecraft by that age, and learning how to make hallucinogens and IEDs from underground BBSes.

I wouldn't want my kid on TOTSE or Roguesci without supervision, but that's because those forums are long on DIY and short on CYA, and I don't want my kid losing a hand or going to prison. It's my responsibility to teach my kids that stuff anyway.

Yeah, people say they're not interested in "politics", but when you bring up a topic they usually have an opinion.

I caught my wife on that all the time. I tried to get her to join the forum but "politics" in the eyes of many means 'Capitol soap-opera'.

"I don't like politics" she says..."oh, what do you think about abortion..."...I let her go on for a few minutes about it and "see? you do care". She says she cares about many different social issues and laws but not at all for "politics".

You're right, though you can hardly blame her for having the impression she does. Our politicians don't seem too interested in ridding themselves of that particular stereotype

Honestly I was the same way myself till recently. Maybe one day you'll be successful in getting her to give it a try. Good luck!

When I was 13(3 years ago) I just found out how to delete certain parts of my history... not that my parents checked, but whenever they used the same computer I just made sure to clean it all up().... that's the truth
