Re: Who should appologize for slavery?

The United States Government should apologize, here is my logic. The US government functions as an institution. It isn't just a collection of people, it is a standing institution of power. The government, as an institution should apologize, because the institution did something wrong.

On the other hand, reparations should not be given out, since no former slaves are living today. Reparations should only go to people directly affected.

Those who engaged in it and propagated the laws should.

I voted. However, I do remember slavery when people talk about how we should honor our traditions, and I give them a John Stewart-esqe look.

Re: Who should appologize for slavery?

No one should apologize for the slavery of the black Africans imported into America for several reasons.

One, all the people involved are dead. That's a big reason right there.

Two, all the descendants of Africans imported into the British colonies in North America that later became the United States are damn lucky to be here, and not back in Africa.

Three, people that have lives should be too busy living them to worry about this nonsense, and people who don't have lives that waste time worrying about an apology from someone who had nothing to do with the slavery issue aren't important and should be ignored.

I say no one should apologize for slavery. After all the offenders are no longer around nor are their victims. Anyone today apologizing for slavery is the equivalent of me apologizing to some guy in Vermont because the person who owned his house a hundred years earlier window was broken by some hoodlum.
Those responsible for slavery should apologize for slavery.

The government of the Confederate States of America should apologize, since slavery was a state-sanctioned policy.

    Moderator's Warning:
Who should appologize for slavery?Yeah, I can maybe give it a lighter look in a religion thread discussing legitimate things. However full out insults of anyone religious has no place in this thread that's not dealing with religion and anyone else further pushing it may find themselves becoming familiar with the number 18.
