Does Your Political View Matter Too Much?

This is something I have always been curious about and something that I'm sure many DP members feel the same way about.

I think people presume too much about others after looking at their political lean here on debatepolitics.com
    .

Even though my lean says I'm liberal I still DO NOT align my self with the Democratic party. Yes, I do find myself agreeing with that party more, but I do not vouch for them. However, I feel that many people automatically tell you what you are going to say before you say it. Like how people continually say "oh you Democrats would fall over yourself for Obama" or "oh you Republicans would attack Obama at every turn," when such things are actually not the case since the person is not necessarily a party member.

So anyway, this is my main question:

Do Debate Politics members presume too much about other members based on political lean?

    Lol just kidding.

I think this presumption is there, obviously, its just human nature.

I rarely look at more than someone's name and avatar. I tend to focus on what they're saying in-thread. Occasionally the fe/male icon will catch my eye, or an award, if the shape of the text indicating their location is to big to be only a state, or similar.

Well, it's that whole sounding evil thing. Have to keep up appearances, ya know!

Labeling seems to be an innate characteristic of the species. The problem arises when we insist that a person share all the traits of the group we assign to them.

Personally, I try not to make too much of a person's stated political inclinations. I agree with Jerry on that score--I'm much more interested in what people say.

A little yes but I wouldn't call anyone out. Its common everywhere.

I will admit I do place my alignment indication on this website with what people think it means rather than what I really am. If I said I agreed with Libertarians most then that would put me in that category, even though I don't agree with them enough to even apply for membership to that party.

I've been mistaken for a socialist liberal and hard right in the same thread by the same person. Not on this site. Long ago.
I'm what Willis was talkin' bout.

The little label next to "lean" means pretty much nothing. I've known "liberals" who were really moderates, "moderates" who were really conservative, "conservatives" who were really libertarians, "libertarians" who were really conservatives, "centrists" who were really liberals, etc.

I myself had to change my "moderate" lean when I realized that wasn't very accurate.

I get a kick out it when people do it to me. I change my own leaning settings regularly to **** with people.

I seldom look at lean, and generally find it to be fairly meaningless. How someone posts tells me about them.

I concur, as an atheist liberal, Python Hellhound and I get on well in the food threads, and he is a lean mean cuisine machine
