This is something I have always been curious about and something that I'm sure many DP members feel the same way about.

I think people presume too much about others after looking at their political lean here on debatepolitics.com
.

Even though my lean says I'm liberal I still DO NOT align my self with the Democratic party. Yes, I do find myself agreeing with that party more, but I do not vouch for them. However, I feel that many people automatically tell you what you are going to say before you say it. Like how people continually say "oh you Democrats would fall over yourself for Obama" or "oh you Republicans would attack Obama at every turn," when such things are actually not the case since the person is not necessarily a party member.

So anyway, this is my main question:

Do Debate Politics members presume too much about other members based on political lean?

More than likely.

I know that I've been served some cold dishes by celticlord. :)

Lol just kidding.

I think this presumption is there, obviously, its just human nature.

I rarely look at more than someone's name and avatar. I tend to focus on what they're saying in-thread. Occasionally the fe/male icon will catch my eye, or an award, if the shape of the text indicating their location is to big to be only a state, or similar.

Well, it's that whole sounding evil thing. Have to keep up appearances, ya know! ;)

I think this presumption is there, obviously, its just human nature.

Labeling seems to be an innate characteristic of the species. The problem arises when we insist that a person share all the traits of the group we assign to them.

Personally, I try not to make too much of a person's stated political inclinations. I agree with Jerry on that score--I'm much more interested in what people say.

A little yes but I wouldn't call anyone out. Its common everywhere.

I will admit I do place my alignment indication on this website with what people think it means rather than what I really am. If I said I agreed with Libertarians most then that would put me in that category, even though I don't agree with them enough to even apply for membership to that party.

I've been mistaken for a socialist liberal and hard right in the same thread by the same person. Not on this site. Long ago.

The little label next to "lean" means pretty much nothing. I've known "liberals" who were really moderates, "moderates" who were really conservative, "conservatives" who were really libertarians, "libertarians" who were really conservatives, "centrists" who were really liberals, etc.

I myself had to change my "moderate" lean when I realized that wasn't very accurate.

I get a kick out it when people do it to me. I change my own leaning settings regularly to **** with people.

I seldom look at lean, and generally find it to be fairly meaningless. How someone posts tells me about them.

I concur, as an atheist liberal, Python Hellhound and I get on well in the food threads, and he is a lean mean cuisine machine;)

Not necessarily, I particularly like the poll questions you have posted.
Your political lean didn't matter.

I try to read the post to get a first impression and go from there.

I do the same thing, I look at what the people are saying. As far as any political leanings, as the OP mentions, this don't mean ****. Political leanings are like the politicians themselves, they all want the same thing and that is power. Canadian politics says that only to clear. :)

I do notice peoples lean, if they opt to put it up. But I don't have a problem with people having leans I don't particularly agree with. Its not as if I have some pressing urge to track down and only debate against particular leans. Also, your lean is open to personal interpretation. I've seen a few moderate/centrists that are pretty liberal by the content of their posts and how I interpret the varying leans. Likewise, I am sure I am considered to be conservative in my views by many people, rather than how I interpret my overall views as being independent of party/ideology .

All in all, I am aware of it, but my judgements really come from the interactions with people and the content of their posts.

Yes, but the better question is do some DP members presume too much about another person because it's easier to label someone rather than deal with their arguments?

As others have pointed out, most people aren't what their self defined label states.

I am more interested in what underpins a person's beliefs than what their stated opinions are. Most don't even know themselves....and remain silent when asked. Some become frustrated when asked...and retort with insults, but most just ignore the questions and, hopefully, are doing a little introspection.
