Do you think the attacks on Sonia Sotomayor will damage the right's standing with Latinos? I'll post my thoughts in a bit.

You did not include a "maybe" option. Depends on how her confirmation hearings go. If they push the racist tag and attack her hard, it could. If they back away from that, as they seem to be doing, I think it won't have much effect. Hispanic voters tend to vote democrat anyway, so I don't think it will have a large effect either way.

Depends on the type of Hispanic. Sotomayor is PR, and they tend to be liberal. Cubans tend towards conservatism, and Mexican-Americans tend to have conservative social values but vote Democrat.

I don't. Certain political stories are big all over while others are big only to the folks who make a point of following this stuff. The Sotomayor story isn't big. It's unlikely your average person on the street, Latino or not, even knows who the hell she is.

No, since the so-called "attacks" are nothing but revealing what that racist feminist liberal has said in her own words, why should it?

If the "latino community" takes offense at the truth, they really do want to turn the United States into the countries they ran away from, so screw'em and they can join the blacks on the Democrat's plantation pickin' cotton and fryin' frijoles.

Overall, I doubt there will be much impact. Sotomayor's record--her rulings and public commentary--is and should be subject to review, critique, and criticism.

For the Anti-Republicans to pretend that all of Dear Leader's decisions are beyond criticism and reproach, and that Sotomayor is not without certain negatives and question marks in her record, is facetiousness in the extreme. She is a mediocre jurist, and will replace a mediocre jurist on the Supreme Court.

I think it will be forgotten within a week.

Though many were justified as this white male feels that her belief that latinos are better than me was rather rude.

Those who support Sotomayor will simply justify her racism and sexism or pretend that it never happened.

I read this and started nodding my head but the more I think about it the more uncertain I become. There are so many people who embrace and identify by culture I can see a scenario where there could be some backlash.

Then I go back to people just being people and I think, nah. IMO it seems we (Americans) have a record of short memories.

It appears the more I think about it the less certain I am that one or the other will happen.

There's always the remote possibility that something wildly exciting will happen during her confirmation hearings but it's far more likely they'll be boring and thus completely off the average citizens radar.

WElcome to "HOw the republican party alienates Latino voters, 101"

I'm curious to see what court cases her detractors think she decided wrongly.

She was chosen on three criteria.

She has a vagina.

The vagina was a latina.

She's a judge.

If you can't see what the Democrats are doing with all this Racial Diversity is Everything, Accomplishment is Secondary crap, that's your problem, not mine. I point it out to you, you're not required to heed the warnings.

Well, there was the one that some white boys trying to make fire chief filed. You see, all the white boys studied, all the black men knew the material so well they didn't study, so when none of the black men passed the cheif's examine, it could only have been because the test was racist. Yes, indeed, some of the black men complained that the papers jumped up as little crosses and set themselves on fire, right in front of the applicant. Now, naturally those guys failed, they couldn't turn in a pile of ashes as their test, right? So the fire department giving the test threw out the little racist test and denied the white boys their earned place as chiefs.

The spoiled little white boys, who never faced racism themselves, of course, filed a reverse discrimination lawsuit....and I can't remember if it was decided in their favor, as it should have been, but The Latina Vagina wrote a decision upholding that it was indeed a racist little test and was therefore unfair to the poor little black men that didn't bother to study the published test guides.

There's a thread around here somewhere that covers this.

I wish the black guys had videotaped their exams, it must have been cool and frightening to watch the paper stand up and self-ignite like that.

She is a fatty isn't she?

She was asked whether it was legal for the fire department to cancel the test because they didn't like the result. The issue wasn't whether the test was fair, it was whether they were legally allowed to cancel the test because they didn't like the result.

Also, she's more experienced than anyone appointed to the bench in recent time. She's got loads of experience, just pointing out.

To expand from yesterday: in the Ricci case, she was being asked if it was constitutional for the Fire Department to cancel their test results because they didn't like the results. To ask her to come in and tell the Fire Department how to pick their officers would be an activist decision, as I see it. The judge is deciding whats best, instead of letting the department decide.

I also think that the utter scorn, sarcasm, and accusations of race-baiting in SA's post is indicative of part of the reason minorities usually don't vote for conservatives. I mean, calling an experienced and capable jurist, who graduated from Harvard and has decades of experience as a judge, the "latina vagina" is completely insulting to her, and can be taken to demonstrate a level of scorn for latinos in general. Not to mention, many latinos are proud to see one of their own elevated for the highest court in the land. To insult her so coarsely, and to dishonor her so, is something I could really see being held against conservatives.

Also, I really think the attempt to portray her as some rabid racist is ridiculous. She said she thought that because of her life experiences as a female latina, two groups that have usually had to overcome more to get where they are, might have more life lessons and wisdom than a white male, while you might not agree, does not make her a brown David Duke. Can we all grow up?

Nope.

In the first place, the Right is expected to question the appointments of a Leftist Administration critically.

In the second place, except for fringe characters, the Right is questioning her judicial philosophy, judicial record, qualifications, activism and so forth. Her ethnic background is irrelevant.

Since the Latino community is made up of normally intelligent people, they should be able to accept this.

Is Rush Limbaugh a fringe character?

I think that may be part, but I think the media and the left make a much huger deal about it when conservatives do it. You could find similar stuff said about Gonzales and Rice when they were nominated. But its "acceptable" to slur and attack republicans on race becuase I mean, republicans are ONLY white old men so any minority put in a place of power MUST be a token and therefore its perfectly fine to insult them all day long.

How do you feel, personally, about the right's handling of it?

Eh, I don't think its goin to hurt them more with the latino population and I think they need to stop trying to do things specifically to "reach out". I hate identity politics and think its absurd trying to do things to reach out to a specific segment. If your message and acts are good it will help americans not black americans or white americans or latino americans. The same thing with the immigration BS where they pissed off the grand portion of their base, including latinos in their base, in hopes of pandering to latinos who in the end didn't give a **** anyways.

I think some of the calls of racism by the right against Sotomayor has been idiotic. I also think some of the calls of racism by the left for people daring to actually critically anaylize her statements is ALSO idiotic. But it goes back to the fact that the right is stereotyped as racist so its PERFECTLY OKAY to do that, but no one bats an eye at a left leaning person doing it because no one on the left could ever be racist.

Who has the left called racist that you didn't think was justified? I haven't really seen that, but I've been too busy to pay a lot of attention.
