Pro/anti-gun -- who is more paranoid?

Who are more paranoid?

I responded those who want more control because as a scientist I cannot avocate more control when there is no data to say such policies would make a difference.

What variety of "control" are you referring to? I'd agree with the undesirability of a ban, but other policies to reduce firearm prevalence may be able to reduce violent crime to some extent.

Polices, such as...?

I support your right to not own a gun. If you don't like them, don't want one, wouldn't spend the necessary time and money to practice for skill and acquire the tactical knowlege that should go with it, or you're not sure you could use it...then you're probably better off without one anyway.

As long as you give me the same courtesy, to possess and carry guns for self defense if that is my choice, I have no problem with your personal choice to go unarmed.

You know what? If we happened to be in the same place when the SHTF and some maniac started killing people, I'd even act to protect you, if possible. That's just good citizenship and humanitarianism.

I think a lot of anti's don't understand that most gun-packing citizens are decent human beings who care, and who wish no one any harm but would risk their lives to protect their fellow citizens if the situation arose.

G.

My girlfriend who is very anti-gun is just starting to grasp this concept.

She was the classical "if you have a gun, you're only a moment away from going psycho and murdering everyone" anti at first. :(

If you have a vagina, you're only a moment away from being a prostitute...

According to the FBI, in 2007:
-There were 467 violent crimes for every 100k people, representing 1.408 million crimes.
-Of those 1.408 million crimes, 29.35% were verifiably committed with a gun
Thus:
-One in 214 people will be a victim of a violent crime
-One in 730 people will be a victim of a violent crime committed with a gun
Violent Crime - Crime in the United States 2007

Given that, who are more paranoid:
-The people that look at the crime rate and want a gun for self-defense
-The people that look at the crime rate involving guns and want more gun control

That means that these crimes are less then one percent almost nothing.

That means that these crimes are less then one percent almost nothing.
That's the point.

There is a 0.46% chance of you being a victim of a violent crime.
The anti-gun side tells you that, based on that chance, you're paranoid if you want a gun.

There is a 0.13% chance of you being a victim of violent crime commotted with a gun.
The anti-gun side, by their own argument, above, must be even MORE paranoid for wanting more gun control.

WOW I fit into that 0.13% and Im not for banning guns.

Yeah, using that argument would have meant I'd be sleeping on the couch and with myself for a long time. :p

Funny how that works.

If only one in 730 people will be a victim of a violent crime commited with a gun, why do you need a gun for your self defense?

Would you like to volunteer for the 1 in 730?

I would rather not.
