Pro/anti-gun -- who is more paranoid?

Who are more paranoid?

If only one in 730 people will be a victim of a violent crime commited with a gun, why do you need a gun for your self defense?
In case someone decides you are a candidate to be person#730

Because its their safety im speaking of.

Your TRUELY fooling yourself if you think the police are going to be there when your life is being threatened by some fool with a gun, knife, or other weapon.

They will try to be there, that is if someone can call without getting noticed by the gun wielding fool, and get through to someone, who then sends the call to a dispatcher, who then dispatches the call to the officer, who then has to drive 6 miles through 5:40pm traffic with blue lights and sirens on (that nobody listens to at that time of day) when everyone is packed on the same road and they cops are having to drive half on the median (slowing them down considerably) to get to your location to clean up the mess that is your body laying on the ground and your daughter kidnapped and being raped somewhere by some disgusting vile thing of a thug that you could have shot with your own gun and prevented all this.

If only you took it upon yourself to learn some self defense and firearm safety.

So I should waste my time and money buying a gun and learning how to properly use it, just in case:

1. Someone randomly breaks into my residence, located in a relatively low-crime neighborhood
2. I am home at the time.
3. That person intends to kill or hurt me for no reason.
4. I am unable to escape from my residence.
5. I find myself trapped in the one room in my residence where I would otherwise have stored the gun.

Posts like yours are a perfect example of the paranoia this thread is talking about. I think I'll take my chances. But thanks for your concern. :2wave:

Cain is a cop telling you not to rely on cops to save your life...doesn't that speak to you?

No. It sounds like a paranoid rant to me. There are SO many more likely ways that I could die for which I could prepare. If not owning a gun (and not worrying about being randomly murdered for no reason) makes me a "homo," then sign me up for the Barbara Streisand concert.

because if people didn't own guns that number would be far far worse.

Its like saying you have almost no chance of catching polio so why get the vaccine.

Does that also include murder rate because it's already way higher in USA then most other western countries that have stricter gun laws? That maybe it's exist other methods then guns to create a safer society, that you American should look into.

A large part of gun crime in the US are gang related. Most murders in the US are gang vs gang with the highest numbers being black male vs black male.

I hear alot of people that say we should ban guns to fix the issue. The problem I see with this is we already have so many guns in the US that if our citizens did turn their guns over to the government the criminals would not. That would leave your everyday citizen unprotected along with armed criminals.

Another problem is where their is demand their will always be a supply. With legal guns being in both our neighboring countries even if we banned them the thugs could still find a supply.

that is a moronic statistic. here is why-as America legalized concealed carry and millions of more guns were bought in reaction to dem attempts to ban them CRIME WENT DOWN. Yet in England and Australia GUN BANS lead to increases in violent crime.

You gun haters never want to bring freedom in the the mix either.

more than 75% of those who are murderers in the USA have a criminal record prior to committing murder. Interestingly, murder victims have about the same rate of records prior to being killed. If you factor out black drug related crime, Americans have a lower rate of gun violence than almost any euro-nation, In an article discussing columbine, NR compared FBI and Interpol statistics and the evidence showed that white americans had a lower rate of violence than white Englishmen, Germans, French, Scots or Irish

Its not paranoia, its just a "safety net" so to speak.

Its not like the average person who has a gun (or more than one gun) in their home for protection purposes sits around cleaning it and staring out the windows and peeking out the door waiting for someone to break in.
Hell we haven't even went to shoot them in forever because we have kids now and don't have anyone to babysit for us where we live (this place sucks), and they rarely ever leave the place in which they are stored.

You take my sarcasm a little too far apparently.....but at least you are being humorous about it.

If only one in 730 people will be a victim of a violent crime commited with a gun, why do you need a gun for your self defense?
Because, as noted, one person in 214 is a victim of a violent crime.

It depends.
The people who think that the government requiring a background check is the same as the government leaving you completely defenseless are paranoid....
These are not necessarily among those the people discussed in the poll.

The people who justify the right to bear arms by saying that they need their guns to overthrow a tyrannical government are paranoid.
These are not necessarily among those the people discussed in the poll.

But the average gun owner, who hunts for fun and just wants to be left alone to practice his hobby, is not paranoid.
And THESE are not necessarily among those the people discussed in the poll -- the poll asks specifically about those that look at the crime rate and want a gun for self-defense.

So, what of those poeple?

Similarly, the people who think concealed carry laws are going to result in a wave of Rambos are paranoid.
These are not necessarily among those the people discussed in the poll.

The people who think that a person who owns a rifle is a menace to society are paranoid
These are not necessarily among those the people discussed in the poll.

But the average pro-gun control advocate, who lives in a big crime-ridden city and wants to ban the most common weapons used to commit crimes in his city, is not.
And THESE are not necessarily among those the people discussed in the poll -- the poll asks specifically about those who that look at the crime rate involving guns and want more gun control.

So, what of those poeple?

I think neither are paranoid. Each are reacting in understandable ways. The difference stems from a personal opinion, not political. Basically, both believe their opinions are justified due to morals. I think, though, both sides can agree that the unregistered guns are where much of the violent crimes involving guns come from.
The vast majority of guns are unregistered, as few places require registration.

The poll is based on the 'if you think you need a gun to protect yourself, you're paranoid' argument bandied about regularly by the anti-gun side. If that is true, given the frequency of violent crime vs violent crime with a gun, how are those that seek more gun control not MORE paranoid?

Rofl. Yeah. You're paranoid if you look at the statistics and think you'll be within that 1 within 730 people.
The relevant statistic here is 1 in 214, as that is the likelyhood of being a victim of violent crime.

If you're paranoid for wanting a gun because of that 1 in 214 chance, how are you not more paranoid for wanting more gun control based on that 1 in 730 chance?

What is the point in these random assertions?
You appear to be making unsupported claims based on your own views.
This is vintage Hautey. You'll get used to it.

The relevant statistic here is a 1 in 214 chance of being a victim of a violent crime. This can happen anywhere, not just your home, and so your agument, above, isnt illustrative of the threat under consideration.

I've been that 1 in 730 a couple times in my life, and those incidents taught me how dangerous the "it can't happen to me" mentality is.

Rofl. Yeah. You're paranoid if you look at the statistics and think you'll be within that 1 within 730 people. :) It's kind of like looking at shark attack statistics and keeping a harpoon around 'just in case'. Or better yet. Keeping a flotation device around you at all times because you have greater chances of dying.

Most women don't get raped either...try bringing your logic to rape victims.

And THESE are not necessarily among those the people discussed in the poll -- the poll asks specifically about those that look at the crime rate and want a gun for self-defense.

Depends who and where they are. If they work the graveyard shift in the inner city, and they have delinquent teenage kids who are involved with drugs, then it would not be paranoid at all for them to own a gun for self-defense.

If they obey the law, live in a low-crime neighborhood, and don't do anything to piss people off...then yes, they're probably paranoid if they want a gun for self-defense.

Depends what type of gun control we're talking about. If it's just common sense regulations (which I know you probably don't consider common sense, but most of us do) like background checks and a waiting period of a few days, then no, they aren't paranoid. If they want a city-wide ban on specific weapons that cause a lot of problems within their city, then they aren't paranoid. If they look at the crime statistics of THEIR city and want to ban lots of other weapons on a state or national basis, then yes, they probably are paranoid.

You gun haters never want to bring freedom in the the mix either.

Just pointing out that USA have a much higher murder rate then most other western countries, that at the same time you have more guns and less gun restriction then other western countries. That if you are dependent on guns for you safety as you claim, then I just suggest that you may also have other problems to deal with.

Also I'm not a gun hater, I come from a country that has relative high numbers of guns per capita. The difference is the purpose and control of guns. That in Sweden you can be allowed to have guns for hunting and sport shooting if you got the right shooting training and don't have a mental or criminal record. If you want to defend your country, but don't want to enlist in the regular army, you can join the homeland militia and be allowed to have a automatic rifle at home. But we don't go around with guns on the street or use them for protection. That is really no need for that.

I don't think it is such an attitude which is what people are disagreeing with. It is the belittling of the dangers for the express purpose of trying to further the restriction of firearms that is what is being mostly objected to.

However as we saw in a recent thread Britain's violent gun crime and violent crime in general has gone up with restrictions so the cause of the American murder rate may have nothing to do with the availability and place of guns in the culture.

I personally don't care if someone wants to own a gun to protect themselves. But count me out.

I support your right to not own a gun. If you don't like them, don't want one, wouldn't spend the necessary time and money to practice for skill and acquire the tactical knowlege that should go with it, or you're not sure you could use it...then you're probably better off without one anyway.

As long as you give me the same courtesy, to possess and carry guns for self defense if that is my choice, I have no problem with your personal choice to go unarmed.

You know what? If we happened to be in the same place when the SHTF and some maniac started killing people, I'd even act to protect you, if possible. That's just good citizenship and humanitarianism.

I think a lot of anti's don't understand that most gun-packing citizens are decent human beings who care, and who wish no one any harm but would risk their lives to protect their fellow citizens if the situation arose.

good points. I wish those who want to disarm the rest of us (as opposed to those who don't want to own guns or realize they do not have what it takes to make their own safety an individual responsibility) would broadcast to the world that they not only are unarmed but that their homes are totally gun free.

why should they soil themselves living under the umbrella of protection that us evil gun owners afford them?
