I am in a condo in the city of Chicago. We have a balcony view of Lake Michigan. It is beautiful as to the south we can see much of the cities Skyline. We are in the heart of the gay area in the city. The condo is located walking or in my case rolling distance from most conveniences. It is very nice.

I would prefer to live on a River or Bay, as opposed to an Ocean, but the Ocean would do. Anywhere I can get fresh seafood and enjoy sailing would be a fantastic spot for me. I suppose my second option would be to buy some old farm house in the country and fix it up.

I would like to live in the suburbs within driving distance to the city.

Give me a big house in the country with a lot of land, which is sort of what I've got now.

Thank you, somebody had to say it. Reading this thread got the Green Acres theme stuck in my head!

An oceanfront house, condo, villa, or apartment

An oceanfront house. On of those big sprawling old houses on the coast. Close to the city but I wouldn't mind a- very -short commute. I love the city though too. I like to be able to walk to the market if I need something, stop on over at my neighbors if they are grilling out, or just have some fun without having to drive 50 hours. I live in the city, I am quite urban you might say, and I really enjoy it. I know my husband would like to live in the country or something like that, so I would be willing to compromise with him as long as it wasn't too far.

However, I would never, ever live in a suburb. I always want my house to have character and distinction and be older. I am so not the suburban type.
Is what you're living for today, worth dying for tomorrow?

I grew up on a big farm and I live in the city now. I miss being able to see the stars the most. Then there's the privacy and the wildlife.

Re: The city, the suburbs, or the country - your preferred place to live.

Done 'em all, and each had its appeal.

Growing up, my family lived in suburban-type settings for the most part, but always on the far edge of things, so mom could have a big garden and maybe some chickens.

As an adult, I lived in a big old Victorian on Russian Hill in SF for several years - my first time living in Teh BIG City. It was wild! Busy and exciting and you're never far from anything. The down side? City life is busy and exciting and you're never far from anything. This includes people going through trash cans every night looking for food/recyclables, pissing in doorways, and driving through the Broadway Tunnel at all hours with the horn blaring.

Had an awesome penthouse condo in Hayward (East Bay) that I just LOVED. Big, bright and beautiful. Except there was an 8-lane freeway across the parking lot, and a freakazoid downstairs neighbor who had apparently never lived in common-wall housing before. He pounded on the walls at me if I dropped the soap in the shower and tried to get me evicted because my two 8-week old kittens made too much noise.

Sold that for the final (and by far the best) destination - a fairly new 3-bdr house on an acre of partially wooded land about 8 miles from a town of 16,000, 25 miles from a city of about 150,000, and 35 miles from an international airport/big city of about 600,000.

Right now, one of my roosters is singing his morning song, as are the birds in the trees. I can hear the creek at the bottom of my property rushing along, and there's a big frog down there looking for romance. Ribbet.

    AAaaaaahhhhhhhh.

The choice is obvious to any submariner...

    Under the sea
    Under the sea
    Darling it's better
    Down where it's wetter
    Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
    While we devotin'
    Full time to floatin'
    Under the sea
