Does religion affect your vote?

Does religion affect your vote?

I know that this is a question that always comes up about candidates. I wonder how much religion influences you when you make your way to the polling place.

I know for me it means nothing. I would rather have a candidate that says he or she is an atheist then a believer. I know this is unlikely to happen in my lifetime here in the US.

To what degree does religion affect the way you vote?

My religion has never and will never affect the way i vote, there is little religion in UK politics

There is more and more religion seeping into the American politic.

Sure there is. You simply don't come across it enough in the liberal media. The Brussels' broadcasting corporation may not report it but don't think for a moment that the average Tory party member is not in some sense still loyal to Christianity and the church.

I don't care where their loyalty is ...
When you are my MP, You represent the constituents. Not your religion.
As far as i am concerned, the second you walk through those chamber doors, you leave your religion on the step.
I liked Blair's approach. Religious but never let it affect his work nor was he showy. That is my type of politican.

MPs are not delegates, they are to give the people their judgment as well as their represenatation.

All people are influenced by their belief systems, secularist Atheistic liberals as well. Christianity and the CoE are bound up with the heritage, tradition, culture and gov't of our society and to try and leave these out is to debase those key attributes of our society. I'd say that the moment you walk through those chamber doors you should bow your head to the lord and remember the place of the church in our society. Church and King as the Tory party's motto has long been should always be in your mind and heart as an MP.

That says it all.:2razz:

And you ask why we don't support Atheists.:doh

As I said it is these crude and arrogant attacks, when it isn't even relevant, that makes a lot of us on the religious side have little time for Atheists. You set up this debate which is not primarily not about the validity of religion Vs. Atheism and then you subject our belief systems to quite crude and arrogant attacks.

In my experience this is not a unique, although then again not a necessary, attitude among Atheists and rabid secularists.

Somehow i get the idea that you feel like your religious beliefs are being attack in this thread and they are not. You made a snide comment about atheists in the first of these three posts with no proof of the existence of your god. I did not attack your faith in any way. I just asked you to back up what you are ranting about?

Rubbish, if a MP votes against what the constituents decide because God told him too. He shouldn't be an MP and isn't cut out for the job.

Influenced sure, but to let it consume you? I doubt it.

Blair had his good moments. I'm just pleased he waited till he left office before declaring his love for religion and the catholic church no less [even more amusing is the fact that Abortion was liberalized, Gay marriage came into play and cloning under his watch]
Would it not have been just funny to hear the Pope and Blair talk? lmao

Oh come on off it, I replied to this post of yours.

You base this on the idea that you are correct in what you believe and that those atheists are wrong. There is very little evidence that can be substantiated that a god does indeed exist. The major proof of him/her/it is in a book that said god had a hand in writing.

It is a random, crude and arrogant attack on religion when the validity of said belief isn't even the purpose of this thread.

I simply acknowledged the silliness of your post and that it is a far from unique attitude I have found amongst atheists and secularists.

Bottomline, it is you who started the attacks, so don't complain when you get back what you put out.

What do you mean they decide? He is not a delegate, he should bow to public opinion often but he is not some easily recallable delegate with a dossier from his constituents he must adhere too. They know his religious views when they voted for him. He owes them his judgment and he owes to the nation his reverence and veneration for our ancient society and forms.
Influenced sure, but to let it consume you? I doubt it.
Well that is different from you said before and rabid secularism is as much a consumation, and it isn't even supportive of our heritage and tradition.

Blair had his good moments.
Doubtful.

I'm just pleased he waited till he left office before declaring his love for religion and the catholic church no less [even more amusing is the fact that Abortion was liberalized, Gay marriage came into play and cloning under his watch]
Indeed, he really was scum.

I have no clue what my MP's religious standing is and when the Human embryology and Abortion bill came up, she voted in favour of both [as well she should have] but if i knew my MP was some religious fanatic who couldn't seperate the two. I'd vote against her/him and any other religious politican.

Lmao, much love to Blair for liberalizing UK in many respects.

I have no clue what my MP's religious standing is
A shame.

She is scum too then. Was she the New Labour or Lib dem variety of scum?

but if i knew my MP was some religious fanatic who couldn't seperate the two. I'd vote against her/him and any other religious politican.
And if I knew my MP was some rabid Secularist Atheist I'd vote against her/him and anyone else who attacks our ancient society and the heritage of our society.

Fine prove what your saying and like any good professor would tell you that you need multiple sources for your proof of this god. Since the bible can not be used as proof of what it is stating you need actual proof other than that book.

Stop trolling. The OP makes no mention of random attacks on religious belief in this thread and yet here you are introducing them; and Laila is worried about religious fanatics.

If it makes you feel any better, i'd vote against any overly religious MP. Even Muslim.
Calm down. I'm not picking on no one religion

But you would vote for an over the top secularist?

I will continue to stand up for our ancient society, institutions and traditions against the ravages of secularism and atheism and I make no bones about it, I'm proud of the fact.

Why would i want to know my MP's religion?
She could be Atheist for all i care or a Pagan. I'm caring. Do your job.

Then it is a shame there are more seculars than religious in Parliament.
Even when a free vote occured on Abortion and Cloning, it was only the catholics who were going nuts and a handful of others. The majority of MP's voted in favour

393 votes to 71.
Bring limit down to 16 weeks was defeated by 387 votes to 84.
A 'cross party' attempt to defeat human-animal cloning was defeated as well by 342 votes to 163.

Abortion and the other moral topics are a settled issue in UK so little need for religion.

Never over the top.
Just someone who understands that his loyalty is to his consituents not his religion. If i want him/her to vote in favour of Abortion and the rest of us do, i do not want him/her voting opposite what we want.

Well even tho i'm religious, i favour secularism and atheism in UK society.

Firstly as you say it is mostly Catholics who are most against those things. I think that we need to have far stricter restrictions but I and even most Conservative Anglicans are not completely against abortion as the Catholics are. Human cloning needs to be shut down but the leftists won't allow it at the moment.

They are not settled issues, the establishment and the media simply treat them as such. If or when there is a conservative upsurge, and the bastards in Brussels don't stick their noses in, you can bet you'll see a change. You should not discount the social conservatism of an important section of the British public despite what the elites and media have been pouring out for decades.

I did not start the attacks. I have asked you a question in regard to your attack on me. If you would like to respond to the OP and let us know if Religion influences your vote It would be nice. Thanks.

Never over the top.
Just someone who understands that his loyalty is to his consituents not his religion.[
And to be loyal to England you need to show a measure of respect to our ancient culture, religion and church.

Well even tho i'm religious, i favour secularism and atheism in UK society.
Again here you are as a first generation migrant wanting overturn our heritage and church. I find that very rude as I have said before. I would not go to Somalia and preach Christianity.

Cloning?
UK leads the way when it comes to restricting. We have our own body that will evaluate and track down every embryo and we know what happens to it from start to finish. Not to mention a cell has to be destroyed in 2 weeks. We have a stem cell bank remember which allows scientists to get hold of stem cell without growing it illegally. We have the best framework to prevent any illegal cloning.

Cloning and stem cell will never be shut down. What exactly are you going to appeal to when talking to the British public? God doesn't want you to heal people and find cures?

It is a settled issue. Abortion has been over for years, it only came up once for a review of the law and was not defeated. No matter how much others tried restricting it. The conservatism is amongst the elderly, the younger generation are no way near as conservative.

Somalia is not my country. But if you wish, you can come Somaliland and preach Christianity. I'll even come with you to hand out Bibles

Sure you did. You weren't attacking me specifically but you started attacking religion randomly, crudely and arrogantly. Or are you denying I replied to this post of yours:

If you mean does my belief system effect my views on politics and society then, like all people, I'd say of course.

If you mean do I vote for or against a candidate because of their religious views then I'd say I'd prefer someone who was a traditionalist Anglican or at least a Christian but it is not the most important thing I look for. So it has an effect but it is far from my overriding concern.

I thought you were talking cloning humans or something, I didn't read that part well.

It is a settled issue. Abortion has been over for years, it only came up once for a review of the law and was not defeated. No matter how much others tried restricting it. The conservatism is amongst the elderly, the younger generation are no way near as conservative.
Because of the media and establishment there is an annoying amount of scumbaggery among the young but as far as i can see it is not anything like as high as you say. In fact I think it is on the upsurge, I know many socially conservative young people. You should not believe your secluded, left-liberal, PC world is what all Britons believe in. Look at the polls in Scotland on section 28 for instance.

BBC News | SCOTLAND | Poll 'backs' Section 28
That too.
Good.

Somalia is not my country. But if you wish, you can come Somaliland and preach Christianity. I'll even come with you to hand out Bibles
I would not want too, I have respect for the traditonal belief systems of nations and communities.

Cloning humans? Hell no.

Lmao, Guardian reader here. Surprise surprise.
You'd be surprised when you come London, we are generally quite liberal.
I know no one who is socially conservative and is not old.
