Humor me.

Make up your mind is it CS4 or CS3?

That's ridiculous. I'm a Photoshop fanatic/user and I've always been flustered with the fact that the program costs more than the computer I use it with!

Maybe we should socialize the graphic design software industry?

Does it really matter to your credit card unless you're getting updates? :p

You wonder why a program that is an industry standard and is created with the help of some of the world's brightest minds in every field from fine arts to computer science costs a thousand dollars? I'm praying that this is sarcasm.

Because photoshop in the long run is cheaper than makeup.

Not to mention it doesn't take hours to apply, it's cost-effective, really.

Ya that is really stupid. Let's just say that a lot of people would've been happy to buy a program like Photoshop if it had been reasonably priced...but since it isn't, they get pirated versions of it and Adobe doesn't make a dime.

I may or may not be one of those people. ;)

People actually buy Photoshop?

But yes you are right! Paint Shop Pro was always around the $100 mark. $169 I think was a high. If Photoshop would have been more around that price range, I think it would have done well. PSP is easier to use too.

I can understand like $300 to $400, but a K is too much for that.

I'm one of those people. :2wave: (or am I?)

But its still bad. I think more people would have actually bought more of it if the thing was more reasonably priced. I mean, yeah Adobe might not make much on that strategy, but atleast it would cut piracy ... a bit.

Photoshop is a professional level program and is priced accordingly. It's the industry standard because the best and the brightest put together a product that was far beyond the competition when it was released, and has evolved sufficiently to justify continued sales. A thousand dollars is generous, licenses for industry level software routinely starts out one or two orders of magnitude higher.

Silly argument :

Paintshop Pro at $120

Slow development

Critics argue that since Corel's acquisition, Paint Shop Pro has had few serious improvements, receiving only minor cosmetic changes, while demanding more system resources.[citation needed] The user interface has remained essentially the same since version 9 and long standing issues with CMYK editing and brush quality haven't been addressed. It's also argued[citation needed] that Paint Shop Pro is becoming too basic, focusing mainly on one-click photo fixes like "thinify", "Express lab" and "eye drops".

[edit] Pricing policy

There have been criticisms of Corel's pricing policy that pitches international versions at significantly higher prices than those charged in the US. [6]

Another different (reversely) pricing example is the English version of Paint Shop Pro (release 9 to XI) could be more than 50% higher than that of a localized version. A Traditional Chinese localized version of Paint Shop Pro X was for sale at HK$699 in Hong Kong, whilst at the same time, the pure English "imported version" from the same distributor, having a price of HK$1199.

[edit] Unreliability and instability

Version XI, in its launch version of 11.00, was criticized[citation needed] for the number of bugs and also for the 'Organizer' function's high CPU usage. Some of the issues were addressed in the patch to version 11.11 but the Organizer continued to attract criticism. It remains problematic when working with large picture collections. The 'Organizer' issue has been fixed in version 11.20.

[edit] Spyware allegations

Versions XI and X2 install a third party program named PSIService.exe, listed under Windows services as ProtexisLicensing. Written by Protexis, this runs in the background and collects licensing information. This program communicates with a remote host[citation needed] and is described in some posts as spyware.[citation needed] The Corel EULA does not reveal that installation of Version XI or X2 will result in the installation and continued background execution of this non-Corel program. Uninstalling XI or X2 will not uninstall PSIService.exe; and upon manually disabling the Protexis Licensing service, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo will cease functioning, stating "This copy of Paint Shop Pro has been damaged or illegally modified. Please reinstall from your original source."

[edit] Limited color depth support

The latest version X2 has an incomplete implementation of 48-bit color. This color depth is limited to a handful of digital image correcting features, but not full-blown photo editing, where the real benefit can be realized. Updating to the latest version 12.01 will not provide full color depth support.[7]

Photoshop at $1,000 :

INDUSTRY STANDARD

Why isn't it reasonably priced? Do you steal cars that aren't reasonably priced? I think Phantoms aren't reasonably priced. Yet you won't find me trying to hot wire one.

No, not silly, You just have to read what I wrote in reply to another person's post.

Or perhaps did you mean you correcting the price of the program? Silly? Maybe. Definitely ridiculous of you though, since it's $69.99

hihi

That would explain why most people just download it for free using a torrent. I get it now ^_^

Can you download a Phantom in torrent form from the net without paying money?

Maybe, but assembly would be difficult.

When I was 16 and just getting into photography I originally considered buying this program, then I saw the price and I downloaded it. I don't regret this decision. My photography skills have gotten a lot better as well as my photoshop knowledge.

Just get GIMP.

You could always use GIMP

Indeed.
Gimp is 10x the editing program photoshop ever thought of being.

1. It's free.
2. See number 1, you do not have to pirate it and force the price up even further. :)
3. All images I've created for this site were done in Gimp.
4. It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux - do not need a powerhouse of computer to run it.
5. "Plugins" or scripts are easier to make and Gimp has a huge library of them - which are also free.
You can also download a plugin that lets you use photoshop plugins too! Oh my!

Cigarette anyone?

Let's see...

A standard Windows program vs a good and useful program geared towards professionals.

What's the mystery?

I use PSP, it does what I need it to do and I've never had any reason to move up to PS so I don't. I'd never pay $1000 for any piece of software, I'd sell my computer first, so I suppose it really doesn't matter.

Of course it is. Each version of Photoshop has a development process off about 3 to 4 years and involves the input of industry professionals in dozens of fields. PaintShopPro is a $120 imitation with nowhere near the power of Photoshop. This is the equivalent of comparing LaCoste to alcohol.

No.

Paint works for what I want to do with it, and it doesn't take long to learn to use a camera to take the photos you want without faking it up with a computer.

Why bother with Photoshop?

Well it's really good for the company that Photoshop is "stolen" atleast by teenager and students. Because it means that they have trained and learned the program then they become working adults. Meaning increased demand from companies to buy the program both because lower training cost (new employees are already skilled in using the program) and also the employees will demand the program because they are accustomed to it.

Who said that Paint is free ?
Actually the 100$ you pay is for Windows and its components .

The question here is why photoshop is that much expensive .

Who said that Paint is free ?

Microsoft. Considering you can download it FOR FREE from their website.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/winntwks40/paint/1/nt4/en-us/paintnt.exe

Google search time .000552 Seconds.

Actually the 100$ you pay is for Windows and its components .

And Microsoft Paint is still available for download freely.

The question here is why photoshop is that much expensive .

It's already been explained why. Photoshop is expensive because it's the RR Phantom of the industry. You don't really get much better.
