    No.

Paint works for what I want to do with it, and it doesn't take long to learn to use a camera to take the photos you want without faking it up with a computer.

    Why bother with Photoshop?

Well it's really good for the company that Photoshop is "stolen" atleast by teenager and students. Because it means that they have trained and learned the program then they become working adults. Meaning increased demand from companies to buy the program both because lower training cost (new employees are already skilled in using the program) and also the employees will demand the program because they are accustomed to it.

Who said that Paint is free ?
Actually the 100$ you pay is for Windows and its components .

The question here is why photoshop is that much expensive .

Microsoft. Considering you can download it FOR FREE from their website.

    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...us/paintnt.exe

    Google search time .000552 Seconds.

Actually the 100$ you pay is for Windows and its components .
And Microsoft Paint is still available for download freely.

It's already been explained why. Photoshop is expensive because it's the RR Phantom of the industry. You don't really get much better.

Yay, it's the version that still had support for gifs with transparency / making a color transparent. Those were the days.

I always have a perfectly legit, legal, registered copy of the Creative Suite, and I never pay for it.

Because Window's is not making it's profit off of some 70 kb program...

Adobe, sorta needs to make money off of Photoshop.

If I needed the whole suite at home or for business I might buy the whole CS suite - I would never buy Photoshop on its own.

As for cost - I remember the days it was given away free - if you bought a scanner or even some early digital cameras you got a giveaway version of Photoshop and suddenly you were on the cheap upgrade path.

At home I have Photoshop Elements - basically a slightly older version of Photoshop but otherwise for the whole creative suite I use all the digital foundations software apart from Gimp. I really REALLY hate "the Gimp" nothing would ever make me use it again. Don't like the interface, having to compile it or waste the time downloading it.

    Artrage / Painter / Inkscape

However I do like Flash (which Adobe bought Macromedia to get hold of) and would buy Flash if I could ever get my head around Actionscript. I love the drawing tools in Flash in comparison to Illustrator / Freehand etc.

You have to remember that their are businesses out there that will pay those prices (or more for a site license) to use those products. These companies tend to target those customers with their ridiculous pricing.

Microsoft does the same thing; as does IBM and countless other software and hardware designers.

It's theivery to be certain; however, it happens and it will continue to happen until businesses refuse to pay absurd prices for software.

What do you use where you need to compile GIMP?

Give it time, eventually - as with other OSS, it will reach the level they expected, but [obviously] not yet. OpenOffice is finally becoming a viable alternative to Microsft Office, but it took time for it to get there.
