I like to eat bananas year round.

And we really need to import fossil fuels.

In fact, your idea to seal the border will cause more deaths then a pandemic would. You live in a moronic fantasy world.

I'm in Mexico right now, have been for weeks, and will be for another two months.

    I'm slightly concerned.

I find it increasingly humorous the number of people wearing masks down here though.

Just like I died from Bird Flu....

    And from SARS...

    and on and on.
And when a communicable disease eventually DOES become a pandemic (and it's only a matter of time), people will be howling that the government and media were downplaying it until it was too late.

This is the problem with the media reporting on non-stories like mad cow disease. It scares people and makes it difficult for the average person to distinguish the diseases that truly ARE worrisome - like swine flu, bird flu, and SARS - from the diseases that are just media hype - like mad cow disease and monkeypox.

Don't think that just because a flu pandemic hasn't happened in your lifetime that it's just media hype. It is a virtual certainty that it will happen again at some point.

During a typical year in the United States, 30,000 to 50,000 persons die as a result of influenza viral infection. Frequently cited numbers are 20,000 deaths each year, and 37,000 annual deaths. About 5-10% of hospitalizations for influenza lead to fatal outcome in adults.

It now seems likely that this started in the United States and spread to Mexico rather than the other way around. Furthermore, the people who brought the recent outbreak back to the US were Americans who visited Mexico, not Mexicans who came to the US. What exactly do you mean by "a closed border"? Ban Americans from leaving the country?

And let them spread it to 50 other people. Preferably to you.

I'm taking as much precautions for Swine Flue as I took for SARS and Avian Flu. Which is to say, none.

I'm worried mostly because my husband has been traveling on planes tons lately. Seems like a great way to catch the piggy flu.

Amen. Those stupid bastards born in slums into poor families deserve the agonizing deaths they've got coming to them! That's what I've always said. See this is why we keep you around, Scarecrow, you're just a bastion of compassion and levelheaded thinking that we can all rally around.

I'm more worried about that statement.

    No, just kidding.

So long as the deaths happen south of the border, I don't care.

We've enough domestic oil resources to supply our needs, if we could get rid of the obstructionist Congress and president that prevents their exploitation.

Last time I checked, bananas don't carry swine flu virus and can be imported easily.

Oh, and they grow in other places besides Mexico.
