Conquered by a foreign force
Dissolve by internal forces
End of the human race

Never watched it, thats the backstory of Joss Whedon's Firefly, only I left out China's part.

Proletarian revolution.I've been reading a lot of history lately, especially Byzantine history, which has fascinated me, especially how you have this thousand-year empire that eventually just couldn't take any more.
It's made me wonder... how do you think the United States will end as a distinct political entity?
What separates the US from the rest of history is that the US isn't an Empire. An Empire consisted of one group ruling over many other groups, and eventually, one of the many groups rebel, and secede, taking territory with them, and it goes on and on, until there are no more territories.
The US isn't an empire, because the Federal Government, treats all it's subjects (states) equally. Currently, there is no one group ruling over the whole United States, all the States are equal in power, one state, or the Federal Government can't do anything drastic without the consent of every state. There is currently no hard-done feeling in any state for them to secede.
Differently, would be the British Empire. One group, a small Island, ruled a quarter of the world, from Canada to India to Fiji. The Indians were the first to leave, taking India with them, then we get the second group, the Africans, then we get the Islands, etc. Now look, it only took 25 years after the war for Britain to go from ruling a quarter of the world, to ruling a few small islands across the atlantic and the pacific.
The Byzantine was the same. One group, the Emperor in particular, ruled a vast amount of land. The same with the Roman Empire as a whole, the Emperor, as one, and one city, Rome, ruled an even vaster amount of land.
With all that said, I'd say the United States wouldn't end through [internal] disintergration, or by secession.
The United States, ie, that nation defined by the Constitution of the United States, has already ceased to exist, dissolved by criminal socialist elements.
All that's happening now is the disposition of the corpse of a once great nation. Will the worms get her, or will she be picked apart by scavengers? Does it really matter, when she's already dead?
