    The True Home Run King?

While reading up on some Mets news I was reminded of a piece ESPN did on Hank Aaron the man who beat Babe Ruth's home run record. While reading his wiki I completely forgot that he was the currently the King of Swing until Bonds broke the record. In Baseball records Bonds is the current champ but personally in my mind Aaron is still the top dog since Bonds' record is in question due to his lying about steroid use. What is your opinion?

A home run is a home run is a home run. While Barry Bonds may have committed perjury regarding his use/non-use of steroids, the use of steroids was not prohibited by Major League Baseball until the 2004 season, and Bonds has never been sanctioned by Major League Baseball for steroid use. Whether he actually has or has not used steroids is immaterial.

Hank Aaron is the home run king no doubt about it.
He didn't use steroids to get his in, he just used his skill and time.

Re: The True Home Run King?

It is very difficult to compare players from different eras. Who's the home run king, Aaron? Bonds? Or perhaps Ruth? Remember, Ruth hit some of his home runs during the end of the dead ball era. Also, the ball was really tight during the late '20's, early '30's. Further, Ruth hit his 713 in far fewer at bats than either Aaron or Bonds. For Aaron, he was the master of consistency, always putting up significant numbers each year, 20 straight wit 20+, 15 of which were 30+, 8 of which were 40+...though he never hit more than 47. Aaron had more longevity than Ruth. As far as Bonds goes, other than the year he hit 73, his stats are similar, but slightly less impressive than Aaron's, though 13 straight 30+ homer seasons is pretty impressive. Again, though, one must consider the era that Bonds played during, an era where the ball was more juiced in order to produce more excitement for baseball, a game that was losing popularity for more action oriented sports, such as football and basketball.

Because of the different era's these guys played during, I'd have a hard time choosing. Interestingly enough, I have a baseball simulation game that can simulate players playing in different eras. Perhaps I'll put all three of these guys up against each other in each era and see what happens.

I said Aaron. No roids, no cocaine (Ruth era).
