We are only having to call it a consensus because there are political hacks disputing the obvious facts and they have an audience with those upon whom scientific facts have no sway. It is, in fact, an undeniable and demonstrable fact.
Thus it is a consensus in the same sense that gravity is a consensus. Which is to say indisputable fact, or sound scientific theory, at least according to those who base their reports on loyalty to the truth and not partisan politics or the belief that we may hasten the rapture by fueling global warming.
It seems apparent based on the data in the same sense that gravity or relativity does. It seems in fact, obvious. I think it would be wise, therefore to believe in it. Unless of course we want to get philosophical and assert that an evil deity may be deceiving us. Which is entirely possible.

Global Warming Petition Project

Over 31000 scientists don't agree with the consensus. Isn't a consensus something that is reached in lieu of a fact? I mean if it can be proven beyond all doubt then a consensus isn't necessary. In truth there isn't room in science for a consensus, because science doesn't accept opinions, it requires empirical, reproducible, peer reviewed evidence and nothing less. Unless of course there are government grants at stake.

Gravity is anything but a consensus, it is a law in the strictest sense. If you place an object in the air without any type of support the object has absolutely no choice but to obey the law, and fall to the earth.

The fact that our climate is and has been changing all through history is indisputable. The idea that we are causing it, or that we have the power to control it, well in my opinion is grandiose.

We can be good stewards of the environment without crushing our economy and punishing the poorest among us by making the very basics of life unaffordable. Poor people can't always afford the high ideals some will place on them.

At least in the US. However, you are ignoring the huge increase in factory and power plant production in the developing world. One major criticism of Kyoto was that the reductions by the first world would be instantly negated by the production of the 3rd. Merely because there is a decline in one area of the planet does not result in a net decline. China is opening coal plants at the rate of something like one a week. And China's coal plants lack the scrubbers, recapture and other emissions controlling technology mandated by governments in the West.

Depends what kind of factory. Aluminum production is pretty horrific in pollutions especially when they burn lignite for fuel. I take it you've never been to Beijing?

Factories in the developing world DO spew out massive amounts of pollution.
Show me where I said we don't pollute. I said the idea of millions of factories is bull****. Some factories don't have smoke stacks.

Of COURSE humanity COULD affect global climate if it wanted to.

There's no evidence it's doing so today, but it's possible.

Here's how ya do it, if you want to start:

Go to the moon. Mine the lunar regolith and manufacture thousands of square miles of aluminum foil. Seriously, it doesn't have to be more than that.

Then take the stuff up to the L1 position and build a giant mirror that will reflect sunlight away from the earth, or move it off to the side to capture more sunlight and reflect it to the earth.

not hard.
not complicated.

And a dandy bug-fryer, too, if anyone like Osama gets uppity in the future.

But since the human contribution of CO2 is one half of one percent of the global budget, since there's a thousand times as much water vapor as CO2, and since water vapor is a more effective greenhouse gas than CO2, and since water vapor is intrinsically variable on scales far greater than any variations in CO2 people have been able to contrive, it's fairly ridiculous to claim human CO2 emissions have had any measurable effects on global climate.

Oh, Helium balloons!

The fact that our climate is and has been changing all through history is indisputable. The idea that we are causing it, or that we have the power to control it, well in my opinion is grandiose.

Actually, it's just absurd.

We can be good stewards of the environment without crushing our economy and punishing the poorest among us by making the very basics of life unaffordable. Poor people can't always afford the high ideals some will place on them.

Well, this is how that works.

Obama-Gore introduces a tax on "carbon" that shuts down American industry. Then because he's created so many poor people, he'll tax more rich people to feed his voter base, and then because that tax will create even more poor people, he'll have to start taxing the poor, too.

Everyone will be poor, the earth's climinate will do what it was going to do anyway, and the Democrats will be happy for having destroyed America.

It's called climate change, not global warming. There is a big difference.

Yeah, they had to change the name when the climate refused to go along and started getting cooler.

The big question is ....if it's now changing back to where it used to be....why are the fools still talking about controlling the processes that were making it warmer? They long for the days when New Yorkers could skate across the Hudson?

Since it's "climate change"...that means it's cooling off...what is Obama still babbling about taxing carbon, since the left has this funny idea that human carbon emissions were warming the planet?

Oh, that's right. The climate began "changing" (for the "better"? Perhaps - no one's ever said what "optimal climate" is) without any input from the control-freak socialists, so they have to hurry up and do something before it becomes obvious that human action didn't have anything to do with the foolish global warming the nut cases were freaking out over in the last two decades.

I mean, if it becomes apparent the clowns pushing global warming as their meal ticket were only pushing it as their meal ticket and they didn't know their asses from their elbows, even voters stupid enough to support Obama might notice.

Can't have that, can we?

I think humans have a duty to protect this world for future generations [Contrary to the popular opinion the Earth is not going to "fix" itself by magic and no - We do NOT have a spare Earth tucked away], perhaps we did not do this intentionally but now we know we have a negative impact - we should be doing all we can to lower the rate it is moving.

Uh-UH! Don't slow the earth down. Do that, and it moves to a lower orbit and zips around the sun faster, the years are shorter, and I'll be sixty that much sooner.

That, and it'll get warmer, too.

It's all well and good for old people [let's face it, they are the main sceptics]

Yeah, that's because we've been around to see all these kinds of lying tactics before.

Do yourself a favor. Dig up a copy of "The Population Bomb", the nonsensical paranoid fantasy from the sixties that demanded the government has to take control of everything, immediately, before there's nothing left and we all die.

According to that clod, (all Malthusians are clods) we were supposed to enter terminal famine ... in the United States ... ten years ago. Yet that idiot book inspired an entire generation of idiots to be ignorant and socialist (same thing), and they didn't waste any of their time actually learning anything about the world around them.

They later became enamored of AGW crackpot theories, for the same reasons.

to say scientists are lying and Governments want to tax more, they are the ones that are going to pop their clogs and leave the mess for my generation to clean.

The scientists are lying.

The scientists (mostly um....."old people"...) found it profitable to generate false panic that gets the people to support government spending for ...um...their jobs.

Governments LOVE to tax people. Look at Obama. Didn't hesitate. Taxing here, taxing there, wrecking economies all over the place. Yet...he's insisting the country "cap and trade" carbon use ...when the globe is entering a cooling phase....without anyone's help.

Since the globe is already cooling, what mess associated with the fictitious global warming scam are you concerned about cleaning up? Oh, you must mean the next scare coming back for you, the NEW ICE AGE!!!! Oh! MY!

Told ya it was coming.

All the animals and landscape, beauty that is here for this generation should be preserved for the next.

Animals die, it's advisable to eat the edible ones and leave you their young, instead.

But here's an idea....if you little kids want to preserve the planet...you little kids need to stop buying cell phones and I-pods and Wii's and all those fashions and all that other consumerist crap you kids demand. Gotta make a start somewhere, you kids want things to change, make the first move. Make your own sacrifices before you bore us with your demands that we change our lives to make you happy.

And i must say, the one nation i thought that would be the most welcoming to enviromental protection - i figured it'd be US as many are Christians and so what happened to preserving God's beauty?

Sorry, the US has turned socialist. Look towards Eastern Europe if you want to see the wonders socialism can do for the environment. First stop on the tour...Chernobyl....next stop...the Aral Pond. Then take a gander at Africa, almost an entire continent dedicated to the proposition that man CAN steal from his neighbors, even if it's only two pigs and a mud hut. Zimbabwe, socialism at it's finest. Ethiopa, mass famines caused by socialism.

Yeah, you young kids have all the answers. See how well the work if you bother to see what's been done by your ideologies when they're applied in the real world?
