Yes. The Empire State Building is one of the greatest works of architecture in the country.

Well, it's definitely one of the better buildings of the 20th century, and there is, unlike that frightening one in North Korea, more elegance and nobility to appreciate the closer you get to it. Sure, one of its primary functions is to convey a sense of authority, but it does so without looking like the personal home of Sauron. You could almost say it's New York's own Pitti Palace.

Personally, I'm just super happy that whatever abominable architectural era we just went through has good and thoroughly ended. Plain standing rectangles....yay. "The World Trace Center -- so beautiful they built it twice!"

For a quick and really fun synopsis of Western architecture in the 20th century, read From Bauhaus to Our House by Tom Wolfe.

I'm just providing a facetious answer which directly contradicts his asinine presumptions about what the typical American would say. His threads do not warrant serious consideration or answers. Besides, we all know the Sears Tower is way cooler...

I get it now. Of course I do. The point of this thread and that other one about the North Korean Monstrosity was to point out American arrogance and hate for everything socialist, non-American etc. What a horrible failure. Thankfully there are those of us who are consistent. Maximus should have tried a building like this one though :

St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow :

Alright so REGARDLESS of the fact that this building is in a country that strongly opposes American policies, ways of life etc. This building is one of the greatest architectural and technical achievements of ANY century. As far as the Empire State building goes. For the most part it's a pretty nondescript building by today's standards. The only thing that sets it apart is some of it's tenants and history as one of the tallest built at the start of the century.

A MUCH better looking building in America is :

That ridiculous excuse for concrete in North Korea is ugly. Not cool. So uncool in fact that it's not even finished. When not even the people building it think it's worth finishing. You have an issue.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. - MLK
