If the US unilaterally gave up her nukes...

... what other countries would follow suit?

Please state the reasons for you answer.

What incentive would any other country have to give up their nukes?

Option A. Be on the same playing field as the United States.

Option B. Be on a higher plane, giving a devastating advantage with little to no reprocussions (from the U.S. at least)

None of the above.

None of those countries have their nukes solely because the US has nukes.

Hmmm. Depends more on Russia giving up its weapons. If the US and Russia disarmed the rest of the list would likely follow with the possible exception of India and Pakistan and maybe Israel.

Because....?
Specifically, why would Pakistan give them up?
India?
North Korea?
Iran?

Because a fair number on that list have it for deterrence against Russian nukes.

India?

Pakistan and India would give them up if each other gave them up. They have the weapons primarily to serve against each other.

North Korea?
Iran?

These are a bit more difficult as both countries' regimes utilize them as a form of legitimizing power. They serve two roles: as a weapon and as why the regime should remain in power. So everyone else getting rid of their weapons likely wouldn't cause those two to disarm due to the the secondary role the weapons play in their society.

So, based on just the US giving up her nukes, your answer is 'none of the above'.

I can't say if Russia would react in kind. But if it did then a number of countries would follow. Under Uncle Boris they might disarm, but under KGB Putin, that's entirely a different story.

Nevertheless, the US really should push for global nuclear disarmament. Henry Kissinger's argument is quite valid as it makes US conventional forces in symmetrical warfare effectively hegemonic. Without the game changer of a nuke, the US military really has nothing to fear aside from getting bogged down in asymmetrical urban warfare.

Which is a huge reason why I doubt anyone (country) would follow through.

We've progressed too far to go back if ya know what I mean.

Once the technology is available, you can't just toss it out and expect to remain where you stood with it.

Pure fantasy!!!

The most likely scenario is that countries would simply hide some and claim they gave them up because there is no way to be absolutely certain someone else isn't doing the same.

If there was a way to absolutely trust others then perhaps its possible. Presuming that countries feel they can adequetely defend themselves without them which is unlikely.

It seems we are all in agreement.
I do not believe we should give up our nuclear weapons but, with the advancement of technology we could scale back our arsenal and save money.

The question begs:
If no one else will give them up, why should we?

Are there a large number of prominent individuals who advocate that we unilaterally give up our nukes?

If not, what's the point of this thread?

France has nukes???

Everyone might SAY they are giving up their nukes but I bet every one of them would hide some because they don't trust each other.

Because this will always be a thought, I believe nukes will never be given up by any country...unless somehow all countries merge as one...

So you're saying that the US and Russia have stockpiles of medium range missiles despite signing treaties to remove them from the face of the planet?

Of course there is no surefire way to be absolutely certain. Hence why there are mitigating factors. We find any evidence of a weapon and massive absolute sanctions get dropped on the offender. Nothing in, nothing out of the offending country.

Oh...no...no...no. The world us hates for our unilateralism.

They'll all just look at each and think, what a bunch of morons.

The US would never give up its nukes, and if it did it would for sure keep a secret stash like any other state that would "give up" their nuclear weapons as a result of the US doing it, if any did so "officially".

You did not answer the question.

I asked a very simple question.
Why dont you answer it, and then we can discuss it?

Umm, ok...
None of them? Now what did you want to discuss? Is this another one of those threads where we have to wait 100 posts for you to reveal the real topic of the thread?
