What did you think of Obama's address speech?

Me personally, there were some parts where I was like "**** yeah", and other parts where I was like "good luck with that".

Overall it was a speech designed to unite. He kind of gave everybody a little bit of what they wanted to hear. It was well delivered, but I think it remains to be seen just how much of what he talks about can be accomplished, if at all.

I think president Obama spoke very well.

It was nice.

But I just hope he doesn't follow through with some of his campaign promises (like taxing some people....during a recession) hopefully his experienced and bright advisers will convince him otherwise.

And God help us if Obama leaves his guard down. He made some naive statements.

I'm fine with the inaugural address, but I'm not so sure about the "Oath" he just took, he so mangled it. I'm not so sure that he was actually sworn in. I'm still recording so I can't play it back as of yet, but there will be replays during the day. The feeling I got was that he was so self conscious that he got in front of himself a wee bit, stepping on his own lines. Chief Justice Roberts tried to help him out but that didn't work out so well either.

I can only imagine the uproar of ridicule if GWB had done that.

I apologize; Judge Roberts definitely made an error in the second line of the oath and Obama halted to give him a chance to correct himself. If I were Roberts I'd be kicking myself royally.

It lacked substance.

Meh. I've been hearing flowery speeches from that guy for over a year now and I am kinda desensitized to the whole "I've beeeeeen to the top of the mountain...Can I get a witness" approach he has. I want to see him do something now.

Re: What did you think of the inaugural address?

I detest any form of advertising/propaganda/campaigning..
Maybe I'll catch it on the 11 pm news.....maybe..

I was moved by the address.

Cut him a break !
He is a man, NOT a machine...

Why are people so damn hard-hearted ?
The wife watches the Drudge Report; they imply that Obama was at fault...:spin:

Sasha gave the speech a thumbs up.

Give him a day....we've just had 8 years of inaction.;)

Wait, so Bush has either been working hard to screw up the country or doing absolutely nothing depending on what? The convenience of the insult you can throw at him?

You people seriously need a reality check.

I was too. I am glad to hear you were. :2wave:

Here are a few passages that stood out for me.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

[...]

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

[...]

We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

[...]

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds.

Feeling a little "testy"...Jallman? My post was tongue in cheek...hence the wink.

I've never said that Bush worked "hard" to screw up the country...I've always taken the position that the man was in over his head from the start and his inability to act and face the crisis that faced him were his downfall.

Obama's gives us hope that maybe someday we will be out of the Bush Depression. I liked the speech. It was full of hope.

It is going to be a long hard road repairing the terrible damage that is the legacy of George Bush and his corporate puppet masters. It will take time and it will take money. Taxes on big corporations should be raised drastically and tariffs should be reinstituted.
We need to stop this horrible America killing war that we are fighting in Iraq.
It is accomplishing nothing and is the most expensive war in our history. The Idea that borrowing money from China to run the United States is appalling.

There were a some parts from his address that I liked. Here they are.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred..

We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.,

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment — a moment that will define a generation — it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

"Let it be told to the future world ... that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it)."

America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

Thank you. God bless you. And God bless the United States of America

I wonder what he considers childish things.

IMHO I'd say it was things like partisanship or things like Harry Reid trying to deny Roland Burris his Senate seat.

I loved the speech, but i'm a liberal. But today was just a really awesome day in America, whether you are conservative or liberal. After all, conservatives and liberals love America and all she stands for, and today we all watched history being made. Some Americans may dislike Obama's politics, but I saw so many people put that aside today and just live in the moment.

This morning it snowed in North Carolina, and there were cars that had skidded off the interstate because it was so slick on the roads. Me and two other cars pulled over and helped a couple get their car out of a ditch, and I noticed that the car stuck in the ditch had an Obama sticker on it. One of the cars that pulled over to help the couple had a McCain sticker on it. We were all strangers with different politics, but Americans are Americans. We help each other.

Yeah, today was a really cool day. ;)

That's funny; I didn't watch it (was at work), but my dad did, and he just told me Roberts mangled it, and that Obama was just trying to help Roberts.

I wonder if Obama supporters will perceive or remember it that way, even if that's not really what happened.

Whatever happened, it really doesn't matter. He was no doubt nervous.
I managed to mangle my wedding vows both times. I'm not good at "repeating after" people.

On the way to work this morning, I heard a caller call in to a local talk-radio show. He was a conservative. He said he was keeping his teenage son home from school today, because the school was going to watch the inauguration coverage on television all day long.
Instead, the caller claimed, he and his son were going to drive to Midland and welcome Bush home.

I just now read that a crowd of 20,000 was waiting in Midland when Bush arrived.

Hard to believe there are still that many die-hard Bush-ites around.

Bwahaha! Either my dad was correct, or else the media is similarly deluded:

"He [Obama] recovered quickly from a brief flub, caused by Chief Justice John Roberts mixing up the wording of the presidential oath of office he was having Obama recite. The word "faithfully" wound up in the wrong spot, but Obama got through it, thanking Roberts and then kissing Michelle."

Ha. This is kind of funny.
My guess is that if Obama hauled off and stabbed somebody in the eye with an hors d'oeuvre pick during the inaugural banquet, the media would report that the person fell into it on purpose, but that Obama was able to remain calm and protect bystanders from injury.

25% of this country has to live somewhere in this country. Might as well be Texas.
