Without a doubt it should be banned. It is not necessary to talk and drive at the same time. I believe that every person who is an owner/driver of a car has a responsibility to take every precaution (possible) to stop their machine from being a metal bullet.

Driving is dangerous, and people are careless.

Unfortenately there are too many people that think that their message is just too important to send via text message. You know the type of people that thinks that the world revolves around them? Doesn't matter how well you educate those type of people...(I could say more but I don't want to get banned...I'm selfish that way. )

I seriously don't get it, not even a little bit. I drove an ambulance while having to man two - three different radios, lights, siren, talk to my partner, and dodge traffic at high speeds. I seriously don't see how talking on a cell phone increases any risk of anything, it makes no sense. The only way to be consistent would be to ban speaking AT ALL in a vehicle; To the adult passengers, to the children you're carting around, or even singing with the songs on the radio, etc. Otherwise, it just makes no sense whatsoever.
Yes but not everyone can multi-task near as well....or for that matter near as well as they think they can.

If this is done then fast food drive-ups should be banned because eating while driving is on the same plane (level).

This coincides with my belief of the "evolution of laws and the snowball effect"!
As has been already mentioned before, using a cell phone while driving simply takes away attention from driving. That is a fact. I would even argue that the hands-free devices, do, in terms of attention given to the road, not solve the problem either. They just make sure you can have both hands on the wheel

Even though I love talking on my cell phone while driving, I think some are not as adept as myself and may cause an accident

    Jerry,

Do I detect some wry humor here?
Wasn't the Railroad Engineer in Los Angeles a while back found to be text-messaging only a 22 seconds before his train crashed into another?
They've since issued an emergency order prohibiting the personal use of cellular communications devices while operating a freight or passenger train anywhere in California.

"Metrolink CEO David Solow told KCAL9 that engineers are not allowed to
have cell phones "within their grasp."

KCAL9 showed the text messages that Sanchez allegedly sent in the
moments leading up to the crash, which killed at least 25 people and left more than 45 more critically or seriously injured."

Good point...if you can crash a train which can only go where the tracks lead it to go then how bad is it really for drivers of cars that use cell phones?

mad Re: Cell Phone while driving

On 5 occasions, in the last year, I have seen very dangerous driving from people driving and talking on a cell phone.

once I was driving down a four lane street in my town, in Oregon, and I came upon a small pickup weaving in and out of my lane just ahead. I slowed down, so I would not come along side of the truck, as it was weaving. We came to a red light, and I came along side of the truck stopped for the light. There was a woman driving with the window down. She was talking on her cell phone and holding it to her ear with her left hand.

She was very angry and screaming at someone on the phone. she was crying and waving her arms angrily as she talked.

She acted like she had no awareness of others on the road. When the light changed, she shot ahead of me, and in the first 50 feet, she weaved into my lane four times. I pulled over, called the police on my cell phone, and gave them her liscense plate number.

That is not the example I responded to, you are changing the goal posts.

A grocery list can be sent via text message. Problem solved.
