We know that this age group tend to handle distractions more poorly than older folks, both because of their brain biology and because they are less experienced drivers.

I think that the older drivers being more experienced tend to be because they have learned to, look ahead and think ahead. However the reaction time of elder people are alot slower than those of 18-22 years old. In other words it evens out in that respect.

Which again begs the question. (only slightly different) Is more efficiency in a business or every day life more important than a persons life?

Technology is great. Wonderful even. But we cannot let that technology take over our lives to the point that it can jepordize anothers life, or your own personal life.

In an emergency situation where a persons life depends on the use of cell phones I can understand the use and condone it. But there are far less people devoted to emergency services than there are of the business people. The every day man/woman use thier cell phones to call a friend or loved one for basic things, for example: "Hello honey, I love you", conduct business deals that have to do with money (not in situations that deal with the potential saving of a life).

If this is done then fast food drive-ups should be banned because eating while driving is on the same plane (level).

This coincides with my belief of the "evolution of laws and the snowball effect"!
When the government banns tobacco and alcohol I'll believe it cares about fatalities.

Until then, "public health" is cover story and nothing more.

Given my true premise, cell phone bans only serve to establish unjust government intrusion into your personal life.

I do believe, however, that anything that occupies your hands and takes them off the wheel, is dangerous and should be cause for a violation. Hands free is a must.
Unless I'm in extreme conditions or driving over 80mph, I only use 1 hand anyway.

    Another thought:

The problem here is that you would need to eliminate so many other things. No radio while driving. No conversations with passengers while driving. No driving while you are tired (studies show that extreme exhaustion is just as bad as driving while intoxicated). To me, anything that takes your hands off the wheel should be grounds for a violation. Anything else, no.
So driving a standard is a violation, then. Time to ban tractor trailers.

Police cursers also, as the cop has to take a hand off the wheel to engage lights, sirens, use his radio, etc.

You might want to qualify your absolute there

Sometimes I wonder if these new laws are just a way to generate new revenue in terms of fines...making all these new laws under the pretense of public safety.

Cell Phones while driving should be banned. I have seen people swerving all over the highway while chatting on the cellphone. I have never seen someone do that while eating a cheeseburger.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Exactly. The passengers know what the traffic situation is and can modify their behavior accordingly. Hard for someone on the other end of a phone call to do that.

BTW, I also want to see an end to TV monitors in the front seat of a car.
