Along with the other choices i selected, i would decrease taxes, but not all taxes.
It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

    Re: If You Were President...

I would raise taxes on the higher income households and offer breaks on the lower income households. I would give tax breaks to companies that employ american workers, and demand that all american companies that use labor in other countries pay those workers at least the federal minimum wage. I would then put holds on many unnecessary earmarks.

I would then attempt to start paying off the national defecit bit by bit. I would encourage companies to find ways to increase exports.

For bailouts I would require banks and businesses to account for every cent they use, and out heavy restrictions on it's use so that it is spent on giving out housing and business loans. I would also require that the interest rates on this money be very low, so that it can benefit more lower income citizens in the long run and return the buying power to working and middle class, who are the backbone of the economy.

    Re: If You Were President...

    Drastically reduce government spending
No. That's a surefire way to prolong the recession. The private sector is not spending any money right now. If the government decides that it's not going to spend any money either, then the economy completely freezes over.

    Drastically reduce taxes
Depends on which taxes you're talking about. Some taxes should be eliminated or reduced, while others should be increased. The overall level of taxation is a little low, but not so low that it poses an immediate problem. I'm willing to maintain - rather than increase - the overall level of taxation until we recover from the recession.

Payroll taxes should be eliminated entirely, personal exemptions and standard deductions should be expanded, and the EITC should be expanded. On the other hand, gasoline taxes should be much higher than they currently are, as should income taxes on the top earners.

    Drastically reduce or eliminate regulations
This is too vague to answer without knowing what regulations you're talking about.

    Stop all foreign aid
No. Foreign aid represents an insignificant fraction of our national budget, and an even more insignificant fraction of our economy. It keeps our relations good with other countries and can help to solve some of the world's worst problems. I realize that a lot of the money goes into the pockets of African warlords if it isn't managed correctly, but that's no reason to eliminate foreign aid entirely.

    End Iraq war
Yes, absolutely. That would free up hundreds of billions of dollars a year.

    End or reduce welfare programs
No. Again, this would prolong the recession. Herbert Hoover's presidency is not usually considered successful...why would you want to return to those conditions?

Send every individual a stimulus check
It depends what kind of stimulus we're talking about. I'm skeptical that just writing everyone a check will help much...but establishing a public works program, and expanding unemployment insurance and medical care very well might stimulate the economy.

    Stop corporate welfare and bailouts
Under normal circumstances I would agree. However, there are some companies that do need to be bailed out in the current economic climate. Specifically financial companies, since they are the backbone of our economy.

    End tariffs and embargos
Yes. Free trade is essential for a strong economy. This is a point of near-unanimity among economists.
    Are you coming to bed?
    I can't. This is important.

Stop foreign aid, out tax dollars should not be spent on foreign countries period.

Reduce government spending by eliminating non-essentials, if it is not law enforcement agencies, military, infrastructure and education it should be eliminated.

In regard to corporate welfare and bailouts, a business is supposed to succeed or fail on its own with no government IE we the tax payer intervention.

We should have tariffs on imported goods to protect American jobs,**** world trade we can't be just a nation a of spenders and service industries. We will screw ourselves in the long if we let everyone else make things for because we might end up going to war with one of these nations and I do not think they are going to continue to sell and make things for us if we are at war with that country.

    Some regulations are good.

I am for welfare as long as it is a helping hand and not a hand out.

Taxes shouldn't be reduced until our debts are paid off and once debts our debts are paid off enact a pay as you go system unless there is a state of emergency such as a war or major disastor. There is no reason we should be borrowing money for non-emergencies from future generations.

Iraq needs to be secured before we pull because if our troops leave before the job is done then all those soldiers and civilians would have died in vain, plus leaving before the job is done sends the message that we won't finish a job and regardless of how strong and vastly superior military is all you got to do is hit us a few times and the peace nick pussies back home will demand we leave/surrender.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

This assumes a cooperative congress, but:
    1) spending reigned in to constitutional limits, but done gradually to allow for social and economic adjustments. Balanced budget w/in five years and paying down national debt within one generation being the ultimate goal.
    2) immediate tort and healthcare reform.
    3) Going to a mixed commodities monitary standard elimination of the market standard we currently practice.
    4) elimination of the I.R.S. and progressive income tax, rather use a flat tax or the fair tax(N.S.T.)
    5) limiting federal regulations to only that which is provably beneficial to public safety.
    6) embargos and tariffs will be done on a country to country basis, we will deal with different governments on an equal basis, they will get what they give.
Neither side in an argument can find the truth when both make an absolute claim on it.
