If you were President and faced with the current economic crisis, what would you do to fix it?

This poll is multiple choice. Vote for all options you would perform.

Along with the other choices i selected, i would decrease taxes, but not all taxes.

I would raise taxes on the higher income households and offer breaks on the lower income households. I would give tax breaks to companies that employ american workers, and demand that all american companies that use labor in other countries pay those workers at least the federal minimum wage. I would then put holds on many unnecessary earmarks.

I would then attempt to start paying off the national defecit bit by bit. I would encourage companies to find ways to increase exports.

For bailouts I would require banks and businesses to account for every cent they use, and out heavy restrictions on it's use so that it is spent on giving out housing and business loans. I would also require that the interest rates on this money be very low, so that it can benefit more lower income citizens in the long run and return the buying power to working and middle class, who are the backbone of the economy.

Drastically reduce government spending

No. That's a surefire way to prolong the recession. The private sector is not spending any money right now. If the government decides that it's not going to spend any money either, then the economy completely freezes over.

Drastically reduce taxes

Depends on which taxes you're talking about. Some taxes should be eliminated or reduced, while others should be increased. The overall level of taxation is a little low, but not so low that it poses an immediate problem. I'm willing to maintain - rather than increase - the overall level of taxation until we recover from the recession.

Payroll taxes should be eliminated entirely, personal exemptions and standard deductions should be expanded, and the EITC should be expanded. On the other hand, gasoline taxes should be much higher than they currently are, as should income taxes on the top earners.

Drastically reduce or eliminate regulations

This is too vague to answer without knowing what regulations you're talking about.

Stop all foreign aid

No. Foreign aid represents an insignificant fraction of our national budget, and an even more insignificant fraction of our economy. It keeps our relations good with other countries and can help to solve some of the world's worst problems. I realize that a lot of the money goes into the pockets of African warlords if it isn't managed correctly, but that's no reason to eliminate foreign aid entirely.

End Iraq war

Yes, absolutely. That would free up hundreds of billions of dollars a year.

End or reduce welfare programs

No. Again, this would prolong the recession. Herbert Hoover's presidency is not usually considered successful...why would you want to return to those conditions?

Send every individual a stimulus check

It depends what kind of stimulus we're talking about. I'm skeptical that just writing everyone a check will help much...but establishing a public works program, and expanding unemployment insurance and medical care very well might stimulate the economy.

Stop corporate welfare and bailouts

Under normal circumstances I would agree. However, there are some companies that do need to be bailed out in the current economic climate. Specifically financial companies, since they are the backbone of our economy.

End tariffs and embargos

Yes. Free trade is essential for a strong economy. This is a point of near-unanimity among economists.

Stop foreign aid, out tax dollars should not be spent on foreign countries period.

Reduce government spending by eliminating non-essentials, if it is not law enforcement agencies, military, infrastructure and education it should be eliminated.

In regard to corporate welfare and bailouts, a business is supposed to succeed or fail on its own with no government IE we the tax payer intervention.

We should have tariffs on imported goods to protect American jobs,**** world trade we can't be just a nation a of spenders and service industries. We will screw ourselves in the long if we let everyone else make things for because we might end up going to war with one of these nations and I do not think they are going to continue to sell and make things for us if we are at war with that country.

Some regulations are good.

I am for welfare as long as it is a helping hand and not a hand out.

Taxes shouldn't be reduced until our debts are paid off and once debts our debts are paid off enact a pay as you go system unless there is a state of emergency such as a war or major disastor. There is no reason we should be borrowing money for non-emergencies from future generations.

Iraq needs to be secured before we pull because if our troops leave before the job is done then all those soldiers and civilians would have died in vain, plus leaving before the job is done sends the message that we won't finish a job and regardless of how strong and vastly superior military is all you got to do is hit us a few times and the peace nick ******s back home will demand we leave/surrender.

This assumes a cooperative congress, but:
1) spending reigned in to constitutional limits, but done gradually to allow for social and economic adjustments. Balanced budget w/in five years and paying down national debt within one generation being the ultimate goal.
2) immediate tort and healthcare reform.
3) Going to a mixed commodities monitary standard elimination of the market standard we currently practice.
4) elimination of the I.R.S. and progressive income tax, rather use a flat tax or the fair tax(N.S.T.)
5) limiting federal regulations to only that which is provably beneficial to public safety.
6) embargos and tariffs will be done on a country to country basis, we will deal with different governments on an equal basis, they will get what they give.

If I were president, the country would be ****ed even worse than it is now. I'd spend billions on porn and chicken wings.

why do we have multiple libertarian posters? they all post exactly the same thing.

god, America's version of the Marxist.

"My magic ideas are going to solve everything, but only if applied in totality and without compromise"

I would send Michelle on a world tour and invite Ali Larter to the White House for a funraiser.

If Ali Larter did not like me I would order the Secret Service to pimp for me, and get impeached, so someone better would get the job. But, first I would make the courts work for me like they work for asshole corporate welfare queens and garnish the accounts of every single executive officer and employee of Bank of America until they could not feed their dogs and their significant others threaten suicide. I would tell them in writing according to court order that if they put more money in the bank than they owed they could eat, it would be a bald faced lie. Also, all the usurers who think a National Treasure Sweepstakes hidden in the attic is funny would be sent to Guantánamo Bay, for their years of unrelenting terrorism of those who fell on bad times, and I would tell the Muslims what they are, then I would close Guantánamo Bay by letting all the Muslims out and leaving; the sight of usurers running for their lives with Muslims chasing them with swords brings tears to my eyes.

Let’s see, what else...

Eliminate capital gains taxes, in keeping with my picture on JFK‘s coin.

If any so-called rich person so much as said, “fair tax,” I would amend the Constitution--like all presidential politicians say they will do something that is not in their job description--and tax the rich ****ing bastards according to their Net Worth at a flat percentage until their butts were red.

Have a public works project for clean domestic energy production to make us energy independent, haven’t got a clue what is best but what the hell; give a man a foreign source of energy, like amber trade, feed his enemies every day, teach a man to make domestic power, feed him for a lifetime. If Congress would not go along, like all presidential politicians say they will do something that is not in their job description, I would make them, and pack the court to make it legal.

Don’t you know it is the end of the world?

I am no libertarian, but I agree with 90% of what they say as a Constitutionalist. I admit some of the idea's they want implemented are unrealistic, but that makes them no less right on a huge percentage of issues.

I think your last comment about compromise is true. To bad more of the government was as uncompromisable.

I used it as an analogy.

Marxism and Libertarianism are both political ideologies that are basically religions to their adherents.

Yea I caught it to late. Sorry. :3oops:

even to israel?

Oh no you mentioned Israel, I guess I have to change my mind then...Not.

Cut off every nation that is getting money from us. American money should be spent on America for basic essentials like law enforcement, infrastructure, military/military operations and etc. And we have a national debt, so it definitely doesn't make any sense to be giving money away like it grows on trees. If you owe money it doesn't make sense to be giving it away when you have essentials to worry about and a debt to pay off. Israel is a our ally and I think they are right in invading the Gaza strip and not letting human shields stop them from attacking the enemy but financially wide they should be on their own. However I do not give a **** if there are Israelis with dual American and Israeli citizenship, our government needs to stop this nonsense of dual citizenship and force them to pick which country they want to be part of and live there. As Teddy Roosevelt once said "Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all."

For those that wish to end or reduce welfare and social programs? What would you suggest we put in place to help our fellow man?

 The best thing is to put both International and national problem behind my ass, get a hookah

Isn't the idea of reducing or ending a program as a means to cut cost to not replace it with something else that cost the same?

"If I were president...". I would focus ALL of my efforts at subdueing the ,Money Whore". Plain and simple money whores created ALL of these current ,and most past financial crisis.Money whoreing being criminal I would then begin to lock them up for a very long time. They,(the money whores),said," if you keep us filthy rich the economy will be strong". They are filthy rich and the economy is anything but strong.

I'd decriminalize and tax marijuana.

I'd create a national lottery.

I'd sell naming rights to national monuments. i.e., The Lincoln Memorial brought to you by Roca wear.

You beat me to this one! One of the mostly overlooked items of the Great Depression is the legalization of alcohol. Unlike pouring money into the "green" industry that is still very immature, Marijuana is a ready industry that could be implemented almost immediately. As unpopular as it's become to smoke cigarettes in the US i'll bet a lot of equipment for making Mari cigs is sittings around unused right now. In addition, it's a popular product that already has a market.

So you let people starve?

So you let people starve?

They can get jobs, go to Salvation army or some other charity, donate plasma, go to soup kitchens, seek the aid of relatives, and many other things. If its just a reduction in benefits then they can simply eat cheaper food, several packs of ramen cost a dollar, you can get two or three boxes of macaroni for a dollar, instead of Oscar-Myer hotdogs you can get Rodeo or Bar-S brand, instead of Del-monte canned vegetables you can get Always Save, Best Choice or some other generic brand. As I said before I am not for the complete elimination of welfare and food stamps as long as it is a helping hand and not a hand out.
