Just curious.. Can you watch movies with subtitles in foreign languages or is this "horrible". Do you like any foreign movies? Have you seen any foreign movies?

I don't mind subtitles and I often put up spanish or french ones when I'm watching an english movie. I've seen a lot of foreign films, chiefly spanish or argentino, but for the most part they were just too weird for me to enjoy them. or waaaay too depressing and dark.

examples:
"amantes del circulo polar/lovers of the arctic circle"--WTF? like half of that movie was unfathomable nonsense.
"mar adentro/sea inside," really not my style. very fatalistic and unpleasant.
"garage olimpo," ouch. "la historia oficial," same.
"frida," yikes.
etc.

as far as non-hispanic foreign films my experience is very limited, I saw "amelie" (lame) and "life is beautiful" (depressing) and that's about it.

There are some foreign movies that I like. City of God (Brazilian), Amelie (French), Pan's Labyrinth (Mexican), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Indian), Run Lola Run (German), Seven Samurai (Japanese), and the Seventh Seal (Swedish)...all really good.

Pan's Labyrinth (Mexican) - No explanation needed.

Warriors (Spanish) - It is about Spanish soldiers stationed in Kosova; a gritty story of soldiers' first encounter with combat and the fog of war.

Stalingrad (German) - It is about some German soldiers who desert during the seige of Stalingrad; not as good as Warriors, but still interesting.

Attack the Gas Station (Korean) - It is about a gang taking over a gas station; the hostages form a unique and interesting cross-section of Korean society.

The Host (Korean) - It is about a monster attack and the family who attempts to rescue their daughter; the only monster movie I've ever seen that had me cheering for the people.

Sex and Lucia (Spanish) - It is a soft porn movie with a plot, and a very confusing non-linear plot with surreal elements at that; I'm not into dirty movies, but this one was worth watching twice just to figure out the plot.

I haven't liked many that I've seen, unless they involved gigantic mutants, usually the result of U.S nuclear testing stomping Tokyo flat, and actors whose lips do not move in sync with their words.

Ive seen Run Lola Run and City of God of those movies you mention here, good movies.

My wife has gotten me into a lot of Italian Movies. Such as Cinema Paradisio, Life is Beautiful, Johnny Stecchino, Il Postino, and Profumo di Donna (the orignal version of Scent of a Woman much much better than the US version).

I also loved some others mentioned above.

I'm also a huge fan of Kung-Fu movies and I'll watch pretty much anything from that genre.

I've learned quite a bit of Italian since meeting the wife, so that I don't need to look at the subtitles for those movies as much as I do with others, so I don't miss as much action in the film while reading. I still use the subtitles because it helps me on certain words and I still suck really really bad at verb conjugation.

But there are tons of great films that aren't in English.

Yes, I love them. There is a movie channel I get that plays only foreign movies, and they are usually wonderful movies. The other night I watched "Europa Europa" and thought that movie was great. Now I want to read the book because it's based on a true story about a young Jew who pretends to be German during nazi Germany.

My dad likes to watch these horrible old Mexican movies that are kinda like westerns but worse. The acting is laughable and the effects are the worse.

A great italian movie is "La vita e bella". "Gomorra" was also great.

Cool French movies are the ones with Louis de Funès, but I don't think they have been translated into English

YouTube - Louis de funes
there he is a bartender explaining a recipe to a German guy

And there have been only 2 good Belgian movies: man bites dog (but it is extremely violent) and Dikkenek (but it has not been translated into English), which is about rednecks
YouTube - François Damiens dit l'embrouille - Dikkenek - 5 cul sec !

What I wonder is how much we are loosing in translation. I know when I watch movies in Spanish with English subtitles, the English can be way off sometimes. There are just some words and phrases that cannot translate correctly. Maybe I will just have to start learning every language of the movies I watch

Having seen Norwegian movies for example with English subtitles, a lot of culture and subtle language is lost.

I can imagine watching US/British movies without understanding English like I do would be quite different.

Also the differences between US and British movies as to language and other things can be quite huge.

I've watched family guy episodes in English, and they were damn funny, even if I don't get everything.

But the French translation MUCH less funny. All the puns disappear in the translation.

Other. I like a great film no matter where it comes from, I am especially fond of Japanese cinematography.

Dubbing is a horrifying thing. Luckily we do not have it in Scandinavia, and I believe the Dutch parts of Belgium and I know the Dutch do not do it either. Subtitles are ok, I prefer watching with no subtitles.

Family guy is damn funny btw.

Dubbing is for the lazy, I much prefer subtitles as well.

They don't miss on a joke often, that's for sure. Very funny stuff.

I don't tend to like British movies. Some are ok, like Monty Python and such. But I don't know, the British of an odd sense of humor that doesn't always translate. For other things, I watch a lot of anime and subtitles are the way to go on that one. Sometimes the English dub can be good, and as of late they've been putting more emphasis on getting better English voice acting; but I like it in the original Japanese. Same with old kung-fu movies, I prefer it to be in Chinese with subtitles. I saw this one French movie...it had wolves or something in it...it was wierd. Saw this movie from New Zealand called Black Sheep (Black Sheep (2006/I)) made me never want to go to New Zealand. Seems worse than Iowa.

Omg, one of the worst films I have seen. Such a bad move. Ranks at my bottom list alongside "tropical thunder" and "lions for lambs", and "eagle eye" as the worst movies I have seen in 2008, and thats a huge list of movies.
