Yes and No. Nobody has a right to a specific job.

If the policy is that you must be Union, then you don't have any choice if you want that job.

You can always choose not to work there, so technically, you always have the right to not join the Union.

Nobody gets FORCED to join a Union, because they can always pick a different field of work.

Re: A right to NOT join a union?

Let me first say that I think unions have done some good and some bad in the country. I think they CAN do a lot of good and CAN help a lot with workers rights. I also think they CAN strongarm people into things though, which is unfair. I was helping to start a union when I worked as a river guide. I was also trying to help get EMTs into the Nursing union when I worked as an EMT.

That said, I have refused to work at a place before because it was a closed shop. (which I thought was illegal) If I had agreed to employment there, I would have been forced to pay union dues and be part of the union. If I had the CHOICE, I may well have joined the union voluntarily. But I flat out refused to have that choice taken away. I would not work at a place that required I join their union.

Actually, you exercised your right to choose. Good for you.

    Ok, so...
Let us say that an employer required you to buy a gun in order to work at his business.
    Same deal?

Of course. It's a job requirement.

At government-run institutions (say, public schools), joining a union should be an option, since the government shouldn't support private organizations like unions anyway. At private schools, their choice.

One shouldnt be forced to join the union unless its a requirement under the employer NOT the union which is very unlikely anyway.

Many union construction companies are owned by people very proud to be union. My Father-in-law is an Electrician and his company is owned by the Union President.

It is company policy to only hire union workers.

You have the right to not join a union just as you have a right to get a union in place at any place of employment!
