Is Populism gaining more of a foot hold here in the US

With the current state of the economy and the obvious anger towards giving Wall Street another tax payer loan. Are Populist politicians or at very the least Populist rehtoric gaining more attention?

Populism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Populism is a discourse which supports "the people" versus "the elites". Populism may involve either a political philosophy urging social and political system changes, and/or a rhetorical style, deployed by members of political or social movements competing for advantage within the existing party system.

Lou Dobbs is a self proclaimed "Populist".

And the fact that he has no bias towards either Obama or McCain gives his rants more credibility.

Sometimes he makes a lot of sense.

Anyhow, I would say that the mentality is definately on the rise.
Especially among his steady viewers.

I watch him because he has no problem slamming both sides which is a rare thing in today's coporate media.

Populism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It's not exactly that great an idea, because populism is often on too close with mob rule.
Secondarily, as we see with McCain, clearly he loves to appeal to what he sees as populist support - ie saying the fundamentals of the economy are strong and then saying that the fundamentals is the american worker.
Sure they may sound good or are what everyone may support, but doesn't always mean it's the right course to steer.

Re: Is Populism gaining more of a foot hold here in the US

For the last 150 years not a single person from a 3rd party has been elected to the presidency. I think we're past the point of populism 'gaining' a foothold.

Populism doesn't have to come in the form of a third party.

And to the OP: Unfortunately, yes.

I think if I got the definition of 'populism' right the fact that 'the people' have chosen to elect only 2 parties for the last 150 years is a sign of populism. But I'm no scholar so I might have it wrong.

My interpretation of populism was just that it's an ideology where people are distrustful of the elites and act in ways that they think will benefit "the people." Though some candidates ran on explicit populist platforms back in the day, nowadays it primarily surfaces as a choice between candidates. GWB for example, with his appeal to the beer-drinking everyman, was more of a populist candidate than Al Gore. Huckabee was more of a populist than McCain who was more of a populist than Romney, while Edwards was more of a populist than Hillary who was more of a populist than Obama.

Bloomberg is pretty much the quintessential anti-populist, part of the reason why I love him so.
