It is a hypothetical question. I asked it because a lot of people believe that the only purpose of the prison system is only reform and no punishment what so ever. So I am wondering if a lot of people with this view would still feel the same way if someone who robbed them, raped their daughter, molested their child,or murdered their loved one would only face taking a pill and immediately being released back into society. Of course since a lot of people have the mentality that this will never happen to me most likely chose the option to release the scumbag after taking the pill.

If there were such a thing, the government would probably require everyone to take it, whether you've ever committed a crime or not.
    Your probably right on that.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Then it sounds like they need the pill too.

I believe rehabilitation is one of the goals of the prison system, but not a priority.Punishment is the main priority of the justice system, deterrence of criminal activity is the second priority.
Both rehabilitation and punishments are big flops and have been for millennia, thru-out the world.
The one thing that does work is prevention, but not 100%, of course..And this is still not being done as well as it could be...
    The "pill" ?
    truth serum ?
    interesting idea

Crime isn't always caused by a physical or mental disorder, wouldn't this pill fundamentally remove free will from these criminals?

Criminals should be punished for crimes, people that require help should be helped, and no medication should be mandated by a political entity.

It can get complicated when you consider that the person might commit the crime KNOWING they can take a pill and get released.......if instead we're to assume they had no knowledge of the pill then why in world keep them locked up if they're instantly transformed into a productive and nonthreatening member of society?

How would you keep it a secret if a victim or victim's loved ones, coworkers, associates or anyone they know see that guy is no longer in prison shortly after being sentenced? Force tax payers to relocate scumbags to different parts of the country?

In this hypothetical the person would no longer be a scumbag. But you are right, others should not be in a sense punished.
