Ok, this is not meant to be a debate on whether we should have safetynet / assistance programs or not. Instead, I am just wondering how many on here personally know someone who abused a welfare / public assistance program and if so, what they did to abuse it. Remember though, this is direct knowledge on your part, not something you heard.

For example, I know a single mother that took one of her earned income credits and got a boob job with it.

I know a guy who majored in computer science, earns at least $50,000 per year, and lives in subsidized housing. He pays $490 per month in rent for a one-bedroom apartment that's probably 800-900 square feet. Granted, we're in Dayton, so housing is cheap...but that's really cheap even here.

I knew a welfare mother who was one of my friends mom. She would bitch about how her daughter's school would hassle her about getting a job and how she didn't have to get a job because welfare afforded her the ability to not have to work.

How is that abuse. An earned income credit is a tax issue, which may have lead to a refund which she may have spent on a boob job. But there is no way to directly spend an earned income credit on a boob job. Did she file her taxes and W2 with fraudulent EIC information?

I technically live in public housing, my building is owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority. It's not a project, it's just owned by PHA through an urban renewal program that refurbishes old industrial buildings into apartments and then subsidizes the rent for a few years to develop the neighborhood. It's a great deal.

My building's PHA "manager", the closest thing I have to a landlord, is a bad, bad man.

He drives a very expensive car and is literally coated in expensive jewelry- but lives in public housing. And not urban renewal housing like I do, in PHA section 8 housing. The worst part is that he brags about it.
