If not, why not?

Iraq is a war we can't win no matter how many lives we throw away or how many years we stay there. The only way to "win" the war is to end fundamentalist Islam and that's sure not going to happen any time soon.

So...
Why don't we have to win in Iraq?

We won already. Major combat operations are over. We are now in an occupation mission.

What am I avoiding? I asked a simple question that no one seems to be able to answer. EVER.

If we must "win" the war, then how do we know we've won? We must be able to define winning in order to know if we've won. So, Define 'win'.

Indeed. Let's get some coherent criteria going here to raise this question out of the abstract, meaningless muck.
After all, I find it highly doubtful that the militias or terrorists or whoever we're fighting over there will be able to make us unconditionally surrender and will then occupy the United States, disbanding our armed forces and converting us all to Islam. So take solace! We have some breathing room to define our own victories!
By win do you mean militarily defeating the Baathist regime, toppling Saddam and so forth? Mission accomplished!
Does winning mean that we realize that we no longer have anything to gain in Iraq and leaving? That would consitute a major victory in my opinion.
Does winning mean staying there forever? Or until Iraq becomes a Jeffersonian democracy that sells us an infinite supply of oil for $3 a barrel?

If all you're going to do is avoid the question, why bother posting?

Victory in Iraq is, here at least, defined as a position where Iraq has bcome a stable democracy, able to tend to its own security and political processes.

Now, please address the question rather than avoid it.
