Is this statment racist?

Yes?

No?

Why?

Why not?

Haha.

Um, yeah. However, my definition of racist isn't as cut and dried. If you just make blanket statements, that's racist. If you present point-counterpoint, along with empirical evidence, it's not.

Black people are criminals

Racist.

In America, the cities with the largest per-capita crime rates are those that have 70% or higher census rates of black people

Not racist.

It is most certainly a stereotype. Whether it is racist or not depends on context and intent.

BTW, you might have termed your thread title in a little less baiting of a way.

Yes, and I think it's racially motivated. And by what standard is this statement following? For example, I have been all around the world and most people think Americans are fat and lazy. I work with Chinese people who work twice as hard as us, so again, what standard? Are blacks being compared to whites as far as work ethic?

Mexicans typically speak Spanish.

My point: What if it's simply an accurate description of what the majority of one group is like? That would not be racist. Saying ALL blacks are lazy would clearly be racist.

Hey, if it gets your attention, it's all good.

And you gotta admit...it sure did that.

Black people are typically lazy.

Is this statment racist?

Yes because of how to state it. If you were to say, "Black people are statistically lazier then other races", and then provide facts to back your statement it would NOT be racist.

Saying "Black people are typically great athletes" is also racist.

..... It's no myth that a white woman holds on to her purse a little tighter when she sees two black guys. This happens often in America. Is she a typical white person for it? I wouldn't be surprised if she was. I also look both ways while going to an ATM. I'm not looking for an emo kid. I'm looking for black dudes in hoodies. However you could call me a typical black person for not being jumping with joy when we have to drive through run down communities in the South. Or not having a smile on my face when there are too many Confederate flags around for my taste. The crucifixion of Obama for pointing out something which is painfully obvious to anybody who lives in America is ridiculous. And the false indignation people took just shows how ready some are to talk about race relations.

White people are typically obese, ugly, and smell like cabbage soup, as long as we're dealing in stereotypes, especially inaccurate ones.

Mexicans don't speak Spanish...Um....ok, sure...then switch the example to French people typically speak French...my point remains valid.

Hey now. I'll have you know that I do not smell like cabbage.

Well, old people typically do.
Like cabbage soup and mothballs, mixed together.
Cabbage-mothball soup.

And they sunburn easier and make up the majority of people living in trailer parks

In what context other than as an example of racial bigotry is it not racist?

I am not baiting anyone. there is a consensus that "typical white person" is not racist therefore it begs the question I ask in this poll.

You want to see baiting just look at the select few obama fans baiting me in recent threads. ;)

Only to see if it needed to be shut down, immediately, and also to keep an eye on it. Threads like these can degenerate fast.

I'm not really sure... Yes it's a stereotype but it's just a sentence. I think Racsist would be like "I hate N's and they all should die" or "You can't come in/get a job because you're black"

Stereotypes are harmless, heck Southerners hear them all the time. And laugh,

Do you mean all black people? Are you a comedian making a joke? Are you making a sarcastic/humorous comment to your black friends. Was the intent to characterize all black people this way and to pigeon-hole them that way? Is it an anecdotal statement that does not stand on it's own? I'm sure their are other examples, but you get the point.

Still fixated on this, eh Reverend. Context and intent. Try applying these concepts to the obsession you have with this statement. And, btw, this is baiting, as your intent on this thread is dishonest. You are trying to bait posters into another "typical white person" debate, with this type of attempted deception. I was quite correct about the "bait" of your thread.

This analogy does not work. Describing one as speaking Spanish is commenting on a learned skill. Describing someone as lazy is commenting on a personal quality. These are different in their application to a stereotype or racist comment.

However, I agree with the essence of your post in not attributing qualities in absolutist terms.

Actually, I would disagree with you on this one. American Blacks are, as a group, better athletes, than whites. But this has nothing to do with race. American blacks, as a group, are also better than black athletes of most other nations too. Why? Survival of the fittest, caused by the system of chattel slavery which killed off the weakest, thus elevating "athletic" traits in the gene pool. Jimmy the Greek was called rascist for his comments on it, but he was right.

Don't I know it. I've been in Deliverance for a couple months and I hear the most ignorant things. I get ribbed on here by people who couldn't hold my jock intellectually.

If people saw northern Alabama, they would really dismiss the stereotypes they hear. Of course, the further south they go, the more the stereotypes get justified.

Stereotypes don't exist up in East Texas. Most of the people there ARE crazy.

Wait a minute, many blacks r very intelligent and I am sure many work multiple jobs as opposed to richer white ppl (blacks tend to have more lower-income ppl compared to whites statistically.)

Why isn't anyone focusing on why the view is that black ppl r lazy?

There r factors involved. Say if a black mother is single and not rich and work 2 jobs a day and has not a lot of time to take care of her kids, or can not put them thru college... does that not impact them on what education and jobs they get in the future? Just that factor alone could account for the high crime rate from blacks. Or why ppl r wary of blacks like what Hatuey said, when withdrawing money.

I still think it is a very unfair statement to make of blacks in general.

If given the same opportunities as whites (financially and social standing-wise) I am sure blacks can succeed just as well as whites do. Nothing to do with whether they r lazy or not.

See this is my point Captian. If I had posted this thread in all seriousness as in I meant it it would be and should be locked down and we should all be appalled at my racist antics, right?

No Just the ones my Grandmother knew.

It is not baiting. It is a fair and honest discussion. If you think that Obama calling his Grandmother a racist in one breath, then saying her racism is "typical of white people" in another, then one would have to conclude that my theoretical topic statment is equal to judgment as Obama's.

BTW this is the 3rd time you claimed "context and intent" as I remember and yet you have to tell me what was Obama's "content" and intent was.

And in those threads, your baiting is quite evident. Don't throw stones.

Nonsense. I only responded to the daily baiting. But it's all good.

Obama's grandmother was "racist" to the extent that, in her later years, she was fearful- wary- of young black male strangers she encountered randomly on the streets, even as she raised a young black male grandchild in her own home.

And her "racism" was- and still is, in fact- typical of white people.
