Imagine my surprise to find, after having not logged into DP for two months, that a thread I created almost a year ago is on the front page.

Way to necro a thread, 1069, lol.

Btw, almost one year later, my former roommate's little half-sister is just as nuts (or in touch with her savior, whichever you believe) as she was when I posted this.

It depends on perspective and context. I am not a Christian. If someone says that Jesus speaks to them, I would want context. If they say that they hear Jesus' voice as clear as they hear a friend's voice, I would be concerned for their mental health.

Do you believe that your god could not speak to people thus, if he so chose? Or is it that you believe that neither he, nor any other god, would ever choose to do so?

I have felt the presence of the gods many times, as you say, in the tales of their deeds and in the words of Odin, even filtered as they were through many human hands. But I have also, on a handful of occasions, felt their presence much more clearly and directly than that, and once I would say that I was spoken to exactly as you have described-- as clearly as if he were standing right next to me.

I know that my mental health stands to be questioned even on the best of days, but I don't dare dismiss the experience as a trick of bad brain chemistry. It was one of the most influential experiences of my life.

Dont we all have an "inner voice"?

Believing that that is Jesus rather than God is quite absurd.

Believing it's God or Jesus is rather absurd.
It's you.
You can make it say whatever you want, including things that I presume God or Jesus would never get inside your head and say.

Often the inner voice is quite contrary to myself..

People who think Jesus talks to them are bat**** insane. 'nuff said.
I love the fact that aps and Bones gave you thanks for this idiotic statement.

It's amazing how certain you are about everything religious? You'd better hope that you're correct, because if you're not......

Maybe the devil in her brain spoke to her.

Jesus and I just had a conversation the other day about the best way to liven up a wedding in Cana. I say you tell jokes, he says you should turn water into wine.

When I told him I can't do that, he just laughed his ass off and called me a "loser little *****-man".

Jesus may be able to do a lot of things, but he's got a mean sense of humor. :(

I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. A lot of people believe extremely irrational things. If someone believes that Jesus talks to them, then good for them. If someone want to believe that god is really a purple Aardvark named Susie Q who speaks only in pig latin, good for them as well. Who cares? As long as someone doesn't try to enlist me into their religion or think that my beliefs aren't sufficient I have no problem with them. I can see where the arrogance and superiority comes from when it comes to Christians because they subscribe to a "my way or the highway" ideology. I don't understand why it would come from Atheists at all. I realize that most Atheists could care less, but there are a lot of them out there who can't stand the fact that people would believe in a God and think that he/she/it talks to them. I don't understand why it would bother them so much.

I talked with Jesus one day. He was my customer service rep at Dell. He not only fixed my pc problem, but explained the mysteries of the universe. And, I signed up to receive a set of Jesus steak knives by RONCO. They slice the holy hell out of just about anything.

Oh, and as a kid, I thought I was Jesus for the longest time. Everytime I would slam the screen door at home, my dad would yell out "Jesus Christ"!

I have a niece who her name is "Dammit Jenny". :rofl

This thread is nothing more than a chance to slam Christianity.

If I slam Democrats, I get a warning but if someone slams Christians they get.....nothing. Makes perfect sense.

It should be slammed.. The principles and teachings of the new testament goes against all what the old testament stands for. For example the ten commandments which should be central to everyones personal moral. Christianity has brought nothing but misery, Jesus freaks are crazy...

The proverbs of the old testament is for sure the best piece of text I have ever read. I have never before or never since learned so much in so few pages.

For example the ten commandments which should be central to everyones personal moral.

Four out of the ten are irrelevant unless you worship the Jewish god. The prohibition on "killing" or "murder"-- depending on translation-- is either so broadly-worded as to be useless or is a truism.

A man could do worse for his personal morals than Jewish law, but the Ten Commandments ain't much good without the rest of it.

You have over 3,000 warnings? ;)

On topic,

Jesus doesn't talk to me personally. I did have two interesting experiences when I was a kid though. One where I thought I saw Jesus, and am still not to sure, and one where I asked God a question and he seemed to have answered indirectly.

Favorite activities of Christians include:

Lying, and
Backbiting..

Those are two of the worst things described in the bible, for a reason.. Our whole society is ruined partly by these two aspects, its so deeply integrated into our society that we are used to it, in our Christian societies.
Did you know that one synonym/hebrew word for "backbiter" is the hebrew word for "satan"?

This thread is nothing more than a chance to slam Christianity.

And you say that like there's something wrong with it. If there is one group on this planet who has EARNED a bit of slamming, it's Christianity.

"Christianity" is a single "group?"

How about, instead, we slam a guy whom does things such as claim to have read everything by Joseph Campbell, but shows no evidence of ever having retained any of it? Or whom will mention things such as leprechans or fairies in place of making an argument about a topic, and smugly act as if a point has somehow been made? Or whom consistently makes inaccurate claims such as:

  • the "theist view, which simply refuses to change no matter what the evidence says"
  • "Religion simply makes **** up"

Earned slamming, indeed.

I don't agree with Felicity often, but she nailed you this time:

And in your insipid response, we could tell that you knew. Do us all a favor and either think a little harder, or bow out of these conversations altogether. You contribute nothing of substance.
