Not to mention it wasn't Darwin's theory of evolution, but his theory of adaptation.

Darwin was a devout Christian, for all of you who don't know.

I think we're really debating semantics here...the semantics of what I mean by "faith". Let me try to explain...

I am not a scientist. To the best of my knowledge, and correct me if I am wrong, evolution is still not proved (albeit the existing evidence weighs heavily in its favor) and is yet, to this day, identified as a theory. And albeit I accept the theories surrounding evolution my acceptance of this theory is based on "faith" that what the scientific community is telling me is true. That their interpretations, based on the existing evidence and the best theoretical ideas of why evolution happens, is correct. And as time goes by this theory also evolves within the scientific community as new evidence, data, technology to interpret evidence and the "why-fors" are found, identified, explored and posited. Does that make sense? That's what I mean by both the religious and evolutionists have "faith" in their set of beliefs.

I think most athiests are that way because they detest the hypocrisy of the religious people in their lives. Most X-tians don't live like X. They see this at an early age and reject the idea altogether. Don't blame athiests, blame Christians because they suck at converting people...I mean...isn't that their job?

    The boss says you're fired.
You're in no position to tell anyone what "the boss" says. Now run along and seek affirmation from your buddies; you haven't impressed me in the least.

You make a strong point albeit I am certain there is plenty of blame to go around for both Christians and Athiests. But with that said...imo it is always much easier to "talk the talk" then to "walk the walk". Too much of Christianity today is legalism and condemnation without any offering of God's Grace. I also believe the Christian at large would much better serve their communities if they actually lowered their defenses, supped with the tax collectors and prostitutes, rather then hide away, safe and sound from the world of sinners around them, within the four walls of their church.

Most Christians I know aren't going to subject themselves to the barrage of insults and the automatic assumption that they are daft which comes from most atheists. It's kind of hard to lower defenses when you are being called an idiot, childish in your beliefs, or a hypocrite by someone who doesn't even know you.

I don't tolerate atheists on any level at all anymore. I used to defend them but now I see them being just as bad, if not worse, than the most abusive of Christians.

I understand but I ask you where's the Grace in your description of "Most Christians" and yourself? And with all due respect to you I don't agree with "Most Christians" anyway but the kind of conduct you are describing only amplifies what I wrote.

I am not what one would consider a devout Christian. I attend Mass twice a year at most.

But I don't think there is any lack of grace when a Christian removes his or herself from a verbally abusive situation where atheists are concerned. You are talking about a group of people who have rejected faith out of some misguided notion that it makes them smarter than everyone else. And then, to constantly reaffirm this notion, they consistently attack and criticize, not the beliefs themselves, but the people who hold to faith.

I, personally, am under no directive to proselytize to nonbelievers; I couldn't care less if they make it to heaven or if they spend their eternities in the bowels of tormented hell choking on brimstone. As far as I am concerned, people have a right to their beliefs and to express their beliefs peacefully and without fear of reprisal. The reason I am intolerant of atheists is because I see the intolerance they show to Christians specifically and, being a gay man, I am acutely aware of the way this intolerance builds and becomes ingrained in our culture. Forgive me but I don't much like seeing anyone treated or spoken of the way gays were for the longest time.

I have concern for you, but you have respectfully and adamantly made your convictions known. I also don't believe atheism is a one-way ticket to Hell. But if I am wrong and it so happens that it is, I can safely say that you number among those I can count on one hand that would be a source of grief for me over the issue.
