President Obama has put Chelsea Manning, the former Army intelligence analyst serving a 35-year sentence for leaking classified material, on his short list for a possible commutation, a Justice Department source told NBC News.

A decision could come as soon as Wednesday for Manning, who has tried to commit suicide twice this year and went on a hunger strike in a bid for gender reassignment surgery.

"I have more hope right now than I have the entire time since she was sentenced," Manning's aunt, Deborah Manning, told NBC News.

"I do think it's the last hope for a while."

While I am sympathetic to arguments that he was known to be ****ed in the head so the Army has some responsibility for what he did because they allowed him to be in that position when maybe he should not have been I say no, on the grounds that we need to demand more accountability from our peers, not less. Also I consider high treason to be the worst crime possible, because it is an attempt to harm all of us, treason is the only offense for which I believe the death penalty is appropriate.

NO MERCY

If Nixon merited one, and Felt and Miller, then Manning ought to be home free.

Archie, Peyton or Eli? Which one are you talking about?

Correct but you left out Marc Rich....one of the biggest richest convicted tax dodger that was pardoned by Slick Willie with a recommendation by Eric Holder.

I don't know. I believe in the rule of law...but I also believe in civil disobedience. I don't know what Manning's motive was....I just know she did a lot of damage.

What did she do?

I'm not sure.

Depends on whether it the female side just struggling through hot flashes, or the male side where he could possibly have placed troops in danger.

Manning seemed "naive," Lamo said, "easily led," but a "genuine, sincere boy."
"The only thing I know about Bradley Manning, based on his chats, is that he believed he was doing the right thing by releasing that information -- the right thing being, in his mind, to demonstrate that the U.S. had done bad things in war," Lamo said.

I believe that this is likely true.

I also say that this does not matter.

What did she do?

Probably the best story ever written on this:
How Bradley Manning Became One of the Most Unusual Revolutionaries in American History -- New York Magazine

A taste:

In the gravityless world of the web, Manning could be all he wanted to be—gay, patriotic, and powerful, too. “I have long arms and a wide footprint,” he wrote from his deserted barracks.

When the computer was turned off and his Army comrades returned, his superpowers disappeared. The members of his platoon didn’t consider Manning a warrior, not like them. He’s five foot two and 105 pounds, as “tiny as a child,” one former soldier said. Military policy dictated that he hide his sexual orientation, but it probably wasn’t a secret to his platoon. “It took them a while, but they started figuring me out, making fun of me, mocking me, harassing me,” he wrote to ZJ, “heating up with one or two physical attacks.” Though, he assured ZJ, “I fended [it] off just fine.”

Over time, the pressures took a toll. At Fort Drum, Manning was losing control, lashing out at his tormentors. He had trouble with roommates, screamed at superior officers, his fists in balls. His master sergeant wasn’t sure he was mentally fit to deploy to Iraq, fearing he could do harm to himself or others. By August 2009, the month of Manning’s last chats with ZJ, he’d been referred to an Army mental-health counselor. Even online, his bravado slipped away. On August 7, 2009, almost six months after he first reached out to ZJ, he popped up on her screen. It was 11:30 p.m., a Friday night at Fort Drum. “i don’t mean to sound over*dramatic, but im quite lonely,” he told her.

“Aww,” ZJ responded sympathetically.

“I’m okay,” he said bravely.

Two months later, Manning shipped out to Iraq with a top security clearance, his multiple identities held close inside him. There was abundant evidence that Manning was having trouble keeping it together psychologically, but the Army brushed aside doubts—it desperately needed intel analysts with Manning’s computer skills

You can't even get her name right? Thank you for helping to convince me that yes, Chelsea Manning should be pardoned.

I was correct in my words, and if the answer to this question has anything to do with me in your mind then you have issues.

Why do you hate her?

My emotional state has nothing to do with this question.

How can I be so sure? Everyone has biases, and it is our own individual job to check those biases.

IRRELAVANT

See that little wavy red line under the word you typed? That means you misspelled it.

Boo HOO.

Pardon? No. Commute her sentence? Yes.

No.

When I think of Chelsey Manning, I also think of Edward Snowden. There is a lot of similarities here, yet also some very big differences. The state has secrets. I don not like it, but it is just the way it is that we have these secrets in order to preserve the security of our home country. So fine, the state has secrets. Now if these secrets are used to hide the wrongdoing of your own people, than I think it is ok for this information to be released and I do not consider this treason. And this is the big difference with Edward Snowden I think. This is exactly what he did. He showed the world that the US government was doing things of which it previously had said that it was not doing them. The government had lied to us. And Edward Snowden showed that to us. For that he is a hero.

Chelsey Manning on the other hand had shown how the Americans worked in both Afghanistan and Iraq. This was not necessary. Some of the Videos were ok, but the war logs were over the top. I do not think that the amount of wrong doing revealed by this release is in anyway still in a healthy relation to the amount of info released that shouldn't have been released. She, in her position, should have been aware of that and shown that by censuring the information that she send to WikiLeaks. And because she seriously failed here I do think that it is better to keep her locked op.

Generally I am leaning to no but could be swayed to yes if a strong case could be made.

I do wonder if Obama is considering this because he feels Manning has served enough time, is rehabilitated and can be trusted in society again?

Or

If Obama is considering this because of the optics of releasing a high profile member of the LBGT will make him look good?

Could be that prison is not the place to deal with FRUIT LOOPS, which is true, but this was treason, he can suffer says me.

The worse culprits were those who gave an unstable private soldier access to vast amounts of very highly classified information. Manning has suffered quite enough - let him out.

He absolutely should at least commute the sentence. The article stated that Wednesday it could of happened, but that has come and gone. There is still time and hope that a commutation or a pardon will come.
