Regulation of Cell Phone Use

Should Federal Law Prohibit Jamming Cell Phones?

I got so tired of distracted cell phone using people clogging the grocery aisles dragging their carts around.....I tempered disgust by throwing things into their basket,:lamo Yeah, that was me who added douche and vagisil to your cart.:(

I wouldn't support that. Texting while driving is dangerous, but not so much that we need to mandate cell jammers in vehicles.

And the statistics only kind of bear out that it's as dangerous as drunk driving. In the studies they find it about equal to driving at the .08 legal limit, but most people who are drinking and driving are well past that. This is probably why there are more than 3 times as many drunk driving deaths each year as distracted driving deaths, despite a much greater rate of distracted driving.
The stats are skewed as distracted driving is more difficult to prove when compared to impaired driving.
From what i recall distracted driving cause more accidents than impaired.
That said i agree that jammers should not be in cars

I have a public and a private position on this issue. My public position that nobody should be able to arbitrarily decide when and where they can block other people around them from being able to use their cellphones.

My private position is: "Jam those mother****ers."
What about specialists- first responders and such that are on call?
As to your earlier post, society has become addicted to social media- phones and such.
We - you - teenagers- children - are the 1st generation of cyborgs.

What about specialists? Were people not able to go to the lobby, a manager or a payphone to make the call? Do you believe that if the stats existed, you would see hordes of people dying in theaters because there weren't cell phones?

Regarding social media, I'm biased, but I thoroughly believe humanity was collectively happier before social media.

Specialists, from heart to transplant of organs are often on call in the event of a medical emergency or if a donor organ becomes available.

Nah, no jammers.

Not when we have artificial organs that can interfere with electromagnetic waves.

The FCC limits the power spectral density emitted by electronic devices across various frequency ranges for good reason. Without those limits, the emissions from one device could be very strong as seen by another device, so strong that those emissions then get mistaken for intentional signals by the receiving device.

I know that artificial organs are an exception, but they're an important one. We don't already know what negative impact could arise from cell phone jamming devices on other electronic devices. It could impact all sorts of devices all kinds of different ways. It could make an anti-lock break system less effective, or even something more innocuous like result in an inappropriate amount of fuel to be provided to the engine, causing minor valve damage.

People gave airplanes a hard time about restricting mobile devices, but electromagnetic waves are additive. The 'air' is a single wire, and we all share it at the same time.

In my opinion, if this is to be done, it needs to be done from the service providers. Cell phone providers could disable outgoing, non-emergency cell phone activity under specific circumstances.

This thread topic is cell phone use, which apparently missed the important first fascist gesture: punishing the internet addict for (not [italics]) having a cell phone, and an example is Yahoo Groups. At a certain point, the switch was flipped, and Yahoo Group members were no longer able to access their group due to (not[italics]) owning a cell phone. We have suggested that others visit Debate Politics to learn more about how these fascist machines operate in screenal space, in the Matrix.

We need a new government regulation making it mandatory to jam all forms of communication originating with conservative US expats in Oaxaca Mexico.

The internet has run its course and is out of style. Other methods of communication will re-establish the local nature of Nature, which opposes, for example, the arrogance and stupidity of getting from point A to B via petroleum addiction, while prisoners in Arkansas jails are photographed being baptized in the local papers, though the coverage for this travesty will only radiate out a certain distance across the geography. The Clinton mafia, accused of drug trafficking, is well aware of this media technique of church-and-state-sponsored fascism, jailhouse confession, and State surveillance.

My biggest issue with this, and I assume its already been brought up, is that if there is an emergency and the business I am in is blocking my reception, serious issues could arise.

No need for a jamming device, just put a little sheet metal in the walls - you might even get away with mesh (or very thick walls, plaster, etc.). Viola! Your building is now a dead zone.

A faraday cage would need to have no seams or openings in order to block all electromagnetic waves.

No real faraday cage completely blocks electromagnetic waves. Faraday cages operate under the principle that absorbing the majority of the power spectral density across a frequency rage like an antenna is sufficient.

You don't own the electromagnetic spectrum and therefore have no right to deliberately block it.

OTHER of course because almost all polls should have an OTHER

lets look at the options:
"Absolutely, I have a right to use a cell phone wherever I choose." No you don't, nobody has that right
" No, businesses should have the right to restrict cell phone use by jamming" jamming is not a right either, prohibiting is "allowed" though

The fed should regulate the selling of jammers for safety reasons but nothing to crazy and no, nobody has the right to use a cell phone where ever they please LOL.

"In recent years, the number of websites offering “cell jammers” or similar devices designed to block communications and create a “quiet zone” in vehicles, schools, theaters, restaurants, and other places has increased substantially. While these devices are marketed under different names, such as signal blockers, GPS jammers, or text stoppers, they have the same purpose. We remind and warn consumers that it is a violation of federal law to use a cell jammer or similar devices that intentionally block, jam, or interfere with authorized radio communications such as cell phones, police radar, GPS, and Wi-Fi.Despite some marketers’ claims, consumers cannot legally use jammers within the United States, nor can retailers lawfully sell them."

I sometimes forget how much people in the U.S. love government regulations. What is your opinion of this federal law prohibiting a business from blocking cell phone use with jamming devices.

I have read about assaults in schools that happened when teachers attempted to enforce a ban on cell phone use in class. I've witnessed disturbances between patrons over cell phone use in restaurants, theaters, and a church.

So, what is your opinion on a federal law prohibiting the blocking of cell phones or even possessing a device capable of blocking cell phones?

A note. I'm in favor of businesses having the option providing they have a conspicuous display advising potential customers they will need to leave the theater, restaurant, concert hall, funeral parlor, or church to use their phone.

I don't know. I've never heard of this. So there is already a federal law against jamming?

In this case, there's no real need to completely block anything, you need only degrade the signal significantly.

Perhaps we need to develop little booths that are the only places where there is cell service, like an old fashioned phone booth. That would solve the problem of people wandering out into traffic while texting, texting/talking and driving, and annoying people who take phone calls during meetings and such.

Moreover, Superman would once again have a place to change his clothes.

as long as it causes no permanent damage to cell phones
