Who Do You Think the GOP Would Nominate in 2020?

Who Do You Think the GOP Would Nominate in 2020?

My great fear is that the GOP nominates someone like Ted Cruz and we have to wait until 2024 to field a credible candidate.

i still find it funny how the far right ended up supporting a big government liberal like Trump over Cruz, who actually is a legitimate far right wing conservative.

Definitely a populist (or someone who purports himself to be convincingly) of some shade or variety; if they're interested in winning.

I see Portman as the best choice if Hildabeast wins. This year Portman didn't want to go against his own governor and he would have had to run for both President and senator. In 2020 he will be four years into his senate seat giving him a safe harbor. and other than the FDR era, holding the white house for more than 12 years is a historic improbability

You'd vote for ANY Republican over ANY Democrat, who are you trying to kid.

for president you are correct unless Ohio wasn't as swing state. I voted for Clark in 1980 since I knew Reagan was going to win. I voted Libertarian in 92 because Bush pissed me off when he raised taxes and started going down the bannerrhoid path. I won't vote for a dem for president until that PARTY jettisons its gun ban agenda.

In other races I have voted for many democrats. Governor I voted for strickland when he ran against Kasich. I voted for Kasich the second time around because the Democrat was a joke-he didn't even have a valid driver's license. Congress-well most of the time the congressman in my district was either Portman-a personal friend, or lately Steve Chabot-a man my father once served as his campaign chairman and who also is a friend of mine. I voted for a colleague who was a democrat one year when the district briefly switched.

where I live now has almost no Democrats in local offices. When I lived in the City of Cincinnati (18-26 in terms of voting ages) I split my 9 votes for city council among GOP, Charterites (Independents) and Democrats fairly evenly.

now since you have "undisclosed" by your lean is it fair to assume you're a democrat loyalist?

I definitely lean to the left, but I would have voted for Kasich over Clinton. The Democrats ran a historically bad candidate this year too. It's just that Trump is worse, and has no business running for president, let alone being involved in politics at all. He should go back to reality T.V. And yes, Trump sucked back when he was a registered Democrat too.

How does Romney or McCain fit those comments.

I would not put Romney or Mccain in that category so good point made by you on that …yet McCain did put Palin on the ticket thinking the base would like him.

Romney was a decent candidate and a good governor of Mass.

Yet they seem to love a Reagan or Arnold , GWB or Palin type. Look at Trump … Jeez.

Reagan was neither of what you stated. GWB-lets see, Andover, Yale, Harvard, son of a president, grandson of a senator. That sounds like hard core Establishment to me

The funny thing about Romney is had he waited four more years, and ran this time around against Clinton, he would have been president of the united states.

Talk about bad timing.

who would have been the candidate in 12? I don't recall anyone but Romney really making an effort

not sure, but Romney was the best of the lot. In fact I'd take Romney over the 2016 lot too, with the possible exception of Kasich.

If Romney was episcopalian, Methodist, Presbyterian or even Catholic, he'd be president now

not sure about that, but possible.

well lots of people who voted for McCain stayed home in 12 and from what I read, it was mainly bible thumpers

from what i remember, supposedly "real conservatives" stood home in 2012 because Romney was "too liberal" Wonder what they will do this time, since Trump is more liberal than Romney?

well McCain was as liberal or more so than Romney but he wasn't Mormon.

If Trump is defeated, and it seems likely that he will, who do you think the GOP will put up to challenge Clinton in 2020? My fear is that the wrong lesson will be taken and someone like Cruz will propel themselves on a tide of 'We weren't sincerely conservative enough, let's take back our country!"

Thoughts?

Edit: The poll was going to be broad, asking if you thought it would be a Social Conservative, a Moderate, a Liberal, a Tea Party-ite, a Trump-ite, a Wildcard, an Establishment candidate, etc. Again, my apologies on the poll mistake.

No idea. They have a civil war to fight. I honestly do not know who will win. Let the finger-pointing begin, and the bloodbath commence. After that, we'll have a better idea.

Good question. But unless you change the basic system - where the same group that gave Trump win after win this year somehow has their power diluted - why would the results be any different and we simply get a Cruz in 2020?

In terms of re-branding the Republican Party.....I think they should dump the social conservative crap and get back to true fiscal conservatism.

You know, the kind of conservative that would not got us into Iraq because he/she new it was a no win doomed money pit of a quagmire that would haunt us financially for decades?

If they would stop talking about women's coochees and gay people....just think of the productive conversations that could occur.

I agree-one of my good friends who is not particularly political but is a very good real estate development attorney noted that the GOP needs to be "Agnostic" on social issues

The social conservatives ruined the party. Reagan embraced them for an edge up on the election. He never envisioned they would grab the party by the balls.

I would say high single digits. With how polarized everyone is, I doubt anyone, including Christ himself, could pull off double digit leads across the country.

HRC has a double digit lead nationally right now, according to one poll. It's temporary, but it's there.

No. Romney lost because he lost the female vote. #bindersfullofwomen Romney, was his tag by the time of the election. That's the one group that hurt him the most.

Cruz can't win the presidency. He's the conservative version of Bernie Sanders.
