A majority of republicans support gay marriage and the legalization of medical marijuana as of 2016. Political parties change over time. Back before the civil war, it was the democratic party which supported states' rights and it was the republican party which was more concerned with minorities. It wasn't until the progressive movement a century ago when the democratic party began its transition into what it is now. Further possibility that the GOP will be like the libertarian party is that in the 2012 election, Gary Johnson ran as a republican and in this one, Rand Paul (libertarian ideology) and that the libertarian party seems more compatible with the GOP because of their agreement on major issues such as the economy and decentralization.

I hope they become the party of Freedom and Equality. The only freedom I oppose is the freedom to harm oneself.

It's still getting higher. Maybe not exactly a majority but in a decade, my statement will definitely be true

If the first supposition is true, they sure do a terrible job showing it in the party platform and in practically every candidate at local, state, national office to this point

I am sure even the fossils in the republican party will have to evolve at some point, but they clearly aren't there yet

I could care less about gay marriage. Most of the people I know who are republican could care less about gay marriage. Most republicans I know wish government would get out of our private lives all together. I don't think the government should have any say in who I wish to live with. I am Catholic so for me marriage is a sacrament the same as baptism or communion. The government has no business in my religious beliefs. The government can no more marry me than baptize me.

I support legalization of marijuana and think it should be regulated the same as alcohol with one exception. I think if you are old enough to die for this country you should be extenuated all the rights of an adult. The idea of a soldier not being allowed to buy a beer or have a drink at a restaurant or bar in the country they are willing to die for is beyond ridiculous and pathetic.

It has been liberal-lite or budget Democrat for some time. I don't see the Republican Party changing. Keep in mind, it was Republicans who brought us the EPA, Affirmative Action, and SSI. No, the Republican Party won't change but we might see people who have been voting for the lesser of two evils, by a thin margin, voting Libertarian instead of Republican.

They might tell you they support libertarian ideas to get your vote. But they won't become like the libertarian party.

Re: Do you think the republican party will eventually become like the libertarian par

I feel they will become obsolete, and be tossed aside by real conservatives that can think on their own.

All we need is a genuine attempt at an effective and workable party.

It will not be a third party, it will be what REPLACES the Republicans.

It has already been proven every political system eventual boils down to only two parties.

Re: Do you think the republican party will eventually become like the libertarian par

I really can't say, but what I can assert is that after the impending defeat in November, the party will undergo serious soul-searching that will likely result in the reinvention of the party. I'm quite pessimistic about the GOP 2.0; what we're seeing this election cycle is merely the tip of the iceberg of a platform that hinged on deceit, malice, greed, extreme partisanship, ignorance, racism, anti-intellectualism, and denialism for far too long.

No. The republican party will stay the democrat lite party.
