No. YOU are not paying "property taxes" when you rent a property or buy goods from a store owner.

You are paying RENT, or buying a product. THEY are paying property taxes, income taxes, and other taxes out of the profits they are making.

That's like saying if you sold me an old couch you had in your garage that I am paying your income taxes.

That goes for you too. You are buying goods, services, or the temporary occupancy of a residency. YOU are not paying THEIR taxes.

Geez. :doh

Geez is right. What a load of semantic nonsense.

Purely a semantic argument.

My landlord wouldn't rent property to me if they couldn't make a profit after everything else.

The people who provide your services wouldn't do so, if they couldn't make a profit after expenses including property taxes.

Your insistence was that people who don't own property weren't paying "Their fair share" but still "use government services" the fact is, indirectly I am paying for the property taxes of my landlord since they have to pay taxes on their rental property and wouldn't otherwise own it if they weren't making money.

They are not paying "their fair share" of property taxes.

You argument is as silly as when a "taxpayer" get's annoyed at some government employee and mouths off "I'm paying your salary!"

That happened to me back once when I was in law enforcement. I pulled out a dime and gave it to the gentlemen and stated "That's YOUR share of my salary for this month plus nine cents. Now move along."

Geez is right. What a load of semantic nonsense.

Yep, the semantic nonsense is from people who think they are paying other people's taxes etc. when they spend their money.

By that argument your employer is paying ALL YOUR taxes when he pays you your salary. Silly circular argument when you look at it that way huh?

Wow, I didn't know one could pack that much straw into a single post. A renter is paying 100% of the property tax for the property he is renting.

Tax negative externalities and don't tax positive externalities. I'd try and get the Left and Right together with a carbon tax at real cost and a 0% corporate tax but raising taxes on salary and dividend net income above a million at a real 30%. Corporate taxes tax job creation, much of it gets passed on to consumers, causes companies to re-locate outside the U.S., and has negative effect on foreign companies moving to the U.S.

And your employer is paying 100% of every tax you pay; income, sales, property, etc. by your logic.

You earn money, you pay YOUR taxes, and when you rent or purchase then the seller or property owner pay HIS taxes out of his earnings. You are not paying anyone's taxes but your own. So unless you own that property you are not paying any property taxes.

But people who don't own homes still use government services, and should pay their fair share. You may not own a home but you may drive a car on highways, may need help from police, firemen, or other social services provided by your government.

Why should only property owners foot the entire bill?

You pay property taxes even if you don't own your home, its baked into the rent....

Read the last several responses...I'm not going to repeat myself except to say that unless you own the property you aren't paying anything but rent.

And those people pay rent to property owners who pay the property taxes. It's absurd to say it's not factored into the rent or they don't pay the taxes indirectly.

Whatever forms of taxation a state government decides is fair.

personally I do not like income taxes, but that's because it's culturally ingrained in me, I'm a Washingtonian and in Washington we have never had an income tax and it's a political third rail in this state.

However, we pay (practically) 9% sales tax (state rate is 6.5 I think, but localities can charge more to a limit of 9. something) and a B&O tax on business receipts (not profits, gross receipts)

However, in Oregon right to our south, there's ZERO sales tax and a high state income tax, sales taxes are a political third rail there.

I guess the point is, I support taxes in general, and think individuals states should be left to decide, but I am happy with no income tax and a high sales tax.

Our state is the exact opposite. People start breaking out the rope when a politician mentions a sales tax.

I prefer a sales tax or "consumption tax". Very simple. The more you buy, and the more expensive you buy, the more you pay.

Tax rates on items can be graduated for things like basic food and clothing vs. extravagant like jewelry, hi-end cars, and gigantic estates.

Simple. Fair.

And holy **** imagine the political manipulation that could and would be done with our economy and business when we start setting different rates for different things.

Ideally: sales taxes (food and medicines exempted), and nothing else. Realistically, the most important thing is to get rid of the most counterproductive practices - corporate taxes and tariffs.

Like I said, semantic, contrarian nonsense. Of course the property taxes for the property you are renting come out of your rent. Don't be silly. You think the landlord just absorbs the cost of property taxes?

So, as a LEO, did you only give a dime's worth of protecting and serving to each citizen?

Sales taxes.

Too bad sin taxes weren't on the poll, not that I support them.

Property owners (commercial and rental) don't pay property tax. Their customers and tenants do.

You are the one saying renters are getting a free ride and not paying for government services they use. Okay... I guess it's a good thing the government is providing "free" services to tenants so the landlords can have subsidized renters who can then afford to pay more in rent.

Let's extend your argument out to it's logical conclusion:

When you seek employment, or start a business selling widgets, you factor in all your costs and financial needs and then seek a salary or set a price that covers them and hopefully allows a little leftover in profit.

As an employee you are considering rent, or mortgage payments plus property taxes, along with normal living expenses and their attendant sales taxes. So when you seek a salary you either get one that meets these needs or you cut back on your expenses to fit the income stream. Therefore, as an employee based on your logic, your employer is paying all of your taxes.

If you are a business owner, you are factoring in all the costs of production, wages, business taxes, rents, utilities, etc. when you set a price for your goods or services. If sales are low you end up reducing production, and prices, and cut your business expenses too. By your argument, the customers are paying all the business owner's taxes.

See how silly this position of yours is? Apparently nobody pays their own taxes, everyone else pays for them.

IMO if one is going for a sales tax... nothing should be exempted.

I actually support all taxation methods. My preference is gov't doesn't put all its taxation eggs in one basket, but instead low to moderate rates for all forms rather that huge property taxes or a huge sales tax etc...

A lot of people seem to be very against certain types of taxes. There's always lots of complaining about income taxes, and there's another recent poll about abolishing property taxes. I think almost everyone would agree that some type of taxation is necessary to fund government services though.

So what types of taxes do you support?

I do not intend this thread to be a debate about how high the tax rate should be, simply what sort of taxation should be used.
I support sales taxes.Everyone has to buy something, there is no way around it and everyone pays the same percentage. I support tariffs as a means to discourage outsourcing . I don't support income taxes due to the fact we are gouged in other taxes nor is it a fair or equal tax. I don't support property, taxes because you should only be taxed on something once. Estate/Inheritance Tax I don't support because taxes were already paid on that.Capital gains tax from what I can tell looks like a sales tax, so I can support that. A dividend tax is basically a income tax which I don't support for the same reason I don't support regular income taxes.

I do not support capital gains nor tariffs. Everything else I support though. I am actually really curious to see the results.

The issue I see of not having a property tax is how are municipalities supposed to be funded? A sales tax is not going to bring in the revenue required, especially in a small municipality. Think of a property tax as a service charge for being in a municipality.
