It seems the Republican Party elite are now shaking in their boots at Trump's success. Will the GOP start embracing issues like big government, planned parenthood, bailouts, banning some "assault" weapons, and the like now?

Doubtful but he may change some of the focus and priorities on some issues. The fact that abortions and gay marriages are some of the number one concerns of some of the far right goes to show you that both parties have their low information voters. And the GOP has been forced to cater to these people to the detriment of the Republican Party. It's one of the reasons why I left it.

Greetings, PoS. :2wave:

I don't think so, otherwise they'd be Democrats! One thing they have in common, though - they both sure seem to enjoy spending our hard earned money!

Also, this refusal to budge even an inch on taxes I think is going to cost the GOP. Trump is willing to raise taxes in some areas.

The Republican establishment for far too long now has been forced to cater to the religious right and tea party types who refuse to budge one iota on issues such as tax reform, moral issues, etc. That's why I despise Ted Cruz so much and why I left the party. If Donald Trump can bring these types back down to Earth and change the messaging and focus, I may just consider voting Republican again if the Democrats can't get their **** together and force candidates like Hillary Clinton on us.

A little, but not too much.

I do find it ironic that if I want to have a candidate to support my number one issue, that being single-payer healthcare, I've got to vote GOP!

This is precisely what presidents do. Only the weak ones don't manage their party's message going forward.

The Republican Party Elite? Maybe, if he wins the general election by enough votes and gets a "YOOGE" mandate.

The far right pissed off folks that hate the establishment because they think don't politicians listen to them anymore? Hell, that's basically whose supporting him now from both parties, so yeah.

The average GOP'er? Probably not.

Old school Goldwater Republicans like me? Hell no.

No matter what happens with Trump if the GOP wants to survive as a major party it will have to move to the center.

Hi polgara. It seems there is very little difference between the GOP and the Dems right now other than stuff like affirmative action, abortion, healthcare and guns. If Trump changes the party the lines will blur even further.

Say what you will about Trump, but he is the only republican candidate since Ralph Reed created and helped come to power the evangelical wing of the party to get them to allow a candidate to move towards the center. That's a huge achievement and a major change to the party already.

You're assuming he'll embrace those issues in the general election and later should he win, because he's not embracing them now, not even PP which he is saying he will defund because of abortion. But I agree. I think Trump's ascent reveals the GOP for the sham it is. Trump is not an ideologue. Everyone knows it. He's a bomb thrower. Republican primary voters aren't sure exactly what they want but they are sure they don't want what their leadership has been giving them. They are hungry for something new, and Trump is new, even better than new. So voters are blowing the thing up to see what takes its place.

In theory, yes. But I believe in the future, if Trump is our president, the left will be WAY more left and the right will return to its more conservative values and overthrow him. So temporarily yes, long term, no.

It seems like the hierarchy is the only group having trouble adjusting to how aggravated some people are with the status quo, and both parties are equally at fault, or Hillary wouldn't be struggling! Maybe that will make them more responsive to the general mood in the future. They seem to think that most people are "grubers" and don't have good sense, and perhaps they're correct, but it took someone like Trump to open some eyes. Time will tell....

You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else.

The Party will come around as soon as they get done with sulking and the 7 stages of grief or how ever the **** that stuff goes.
