I find it fascinating and disturbing that many liberal and progressive Catholics are all of a sudden very interested in religion when they weren't at all before -- all because of this pope.

And to that I say --- you're doing it wrong.

Maybe it's because this pope is taking a role in advocating for social justice instead of worrying about what language is used to celebrate mass.

Oh, I'm very sure it is. This pope is very much into what government should be doing for people and liberals love that.

And I can see how that frosts the right wing, who don't believe government should exist at all - except to keep the rabble in their place, of course.

Yeah, we can't have those religious leaders expressing opinions on social issues. Especially when they disagree with you.

Expressing opinions is one thing...political activism is another. Like it or not, he is a political activist more then a pope.

while you seek a figurehead, others of us applaud a change agent

And, this is throwing out the bathwater, baby and all . Less than nothing is accomplished . If something is corrupted , best to clean it, body and soul .. I feel that it will take a million Pope Francis's to do this cleansing .

Religion eradicated is accomplishing a lot...

Who are these others you are talking about? You liberals had no use for religious leaders of any faith until the present pope became known as a liberal activist. Personally, as a catholic, I don't care what a pope's politics are, I just expect him to lead the catholic church in a positive way and leave the politics activism to the secular world.

Lets see,

His weak and accommodating stance on homosexuality, then in a time of a declining and aging population, particularly in Europe, he has made statements against the tradition of large families, has accepted the outlandish lie of climate change, additionally his stances with environmentalists on things that have a true benefit to all mankind such as fracking, has contradicted the former Pope on whose realization that Marxism-Socialism is a failed system, has even called for redistribution of wealth on a state scale, the changes he has made to church policy regarding marriage and divorce...

I think you get the drift and those are a few of the more obvious ones.

IOW, he's acting like a Christian ..... I can see why fundies don't like him.

I am a retired Catholic. If I were still a part of the Church, he would really bother me: While probably sincere in his desire to focus on serving the underprivileged, he also seems to be convinced that the very forces that reduce and could eventually eliminate poverty and suffering - capitalism and development - are to blame for all ills of the world. Coming from the most influential spiritual figure on Earth, it is a very potent toxic message that may become extremely destructive.

My sentiments exactly.

That 20% do not like the Pope, I find disturbing...Not a "perfect" individual of course, but as close as "good" as possible ..We need many more like him .. and fewer extremists.

Religion is necessary for the "weak-minded" . Maybe, when I hit 90 and am really feeble, my mind may be "weak" .. I NOW think we need a lot more philosophy and less religion .

Its good that this Pope has entered the political spectrum and he has every right .. I think the conservative/extremists dislike him due to his stance on minorities/privilege/responsibility/sharing.....aka .. being selfish .

If only the conservative/extremists could be honest with themselves and others ....then , we will be able to make progress.
I am with the "rabble''.

Exactly what are we doing ''wrong''.
Not a Catholic, maybe an atheist .. be me ..

When did liberals suddenly like religion?

Son.....I am merely expressing my opinions and criticizing this particular pope as I please. Past that.....I don't care what he does. I will just not be a fan.

Really? I suppose what you mean is that he supports causes that you oppose.

When did liberals suddenly like religion?

About the same time conservatives decided the point of religion was to serve the interests of the privileged.

But then, you liberals think serving the underprivileged just means buying their votes by plying them with welfare benefits for life.

Yeah, I realize that it doesn't hold a candle to the 'compassionate conservatism' you folks display on a regular basis. Must be why you're so darned popular with minorities and the poor. :lamo

muslims are not a part of minorities ?

Religion is more than a crutch or solace for the 'weak-minded'. You only need to look at a list of very intelligent religious people to know it's not that simple.

If it was in your power, would you remove religion from the lives of everyone in the world?

Salvation, redemption and eternal life have always been offered and always will be offered through Jesus Christ. Liberals and progressives who suddenly think it's "hip" to be a Catholic now simply because of this Pope are missing the entire point of the Gospel. It ain't about the Pope or politics.

I think that he is doing a decent job of dealing with the rampant Vatican corruption that has been for so long ignored, but as a spiritual guide and world leader he is very sub par for a Pope.
