Here is what I think may be immoral about football...

People are socially allowed to worship it, fan over it, discuss it, do whatever they want with it. It's "ok" to scream incomprehensibly at a TV over what someone did, dress like players, discuss stats and examine things with full devotion backwards and forwards and that's fine.

But then again the gamer geek, science nerd, etc. Those people are shunned for being "weird" yet oftentimes having more mild obsessions with their hobby that the football player. When you look at what some do in their fandom it's a little extreme, and if someone takes it to the same level as someone else they are judged or "weird."

That said, football isn't immoral and I wouldn't say watching it is either. Do what you like. I personally find it boring, not entertaining and don't get the hype with it.

Football as a sport itself isn't immoral. However what is immoral is the NFL's attempt to white wash and undermine the well being of their athletes by ignoring the dangers that come with consistent head trauma. It is possible to enjoy the product while criticizing the actions of the NFL management which at best can be considered "questionable."

But of course, it's absolutely immoral to watch the Dallas Cowboys.

If you think it is immoral, then it is immoral to watch it, for you.

Personally, I watch fighting sports almost exclusively. Well, that an "extreme" outdoor sports. Both of which can get you hurt, or killed.

I used to DO those things too, when I was younger. It takes a certain mindset to climb into the ring with a total stranger, who has never done anything to you, and try to beat each other's brains in for a trophy or a cash purse. It was a little strange the first time, but I figured we both choose to be there, so we both choose to take the risk.

No one is ignorant anymore..... Players have zero excuse now... play and get the money .....or don't, that's it, it's their choice.

I bet office jobs probably kill more people making them obese.

I'm surprised the NFL has never had a death on the field, it's really surprising... most sports have.

Way too many people looking to take all the fun away...

i have come to believe, and perhaps should've all along, that enabling or pressuring minors to play contact football is barbaric/immoral due to the growing evidence of CTE and heat stroke in summer drills. That includes paying to go to a game, as without funds, they are unlikely to afford a team

The disparity in not allowing one's own kid to play football and watching others' "kids" (even as adults) can be easily explained: people are selfish and don't mind others bashing their heads in until they're a drooling mess, but are super protective of themselves and their own kids. It's the same reason the military are our heroes but few ever volunteer themselves or are even willing to pay higher taxes so the grunts get decent pay and psychological treatment

Football fans just find ways to rationalize that they enjoy their fix that they simultaneously find intolerably risky to participate in themselves. It's like modern day gladiator fights. I'm also guilty of this, probably even more so than the super bowl crowd, since my fix is the college game

Nonetheless, parents who keep their kids away will ironically be the end of their own football viewing addiction. Just do the math. Football is dying off in the midwest already. Schools are having to combine teams. Without high school teams, either because of those parents or legislation or lawsuits or kids deciding on their own to pursue other sports, there is no nfl. It's just impractical to field 30 teams of 55 highly athletic players who don't even start training for football until age 18. That in fact would only exacerbate concussions, because they've not been taught at all how to hit. At the very least, the quality and interest will drop significantly

office workers live longer on average. In fact, the last study i saw found that nfl players live shorter than walmart workers...which is pretty incredible since the former can afford to go to doctors

and even aside from CTE, if we go with your cause of death, offensive lineman are freaking enormous and have to keep up that weight to maintain a roster spot. So i bet the nfl kills more proportionately thru obesity, by a long shot

Inspired by this.

Is it immoral to watch the Super Bowl?: Column

Granted that specifies the Super Bowl only, however it's clear the author means football as a whole. I've been watching some on the left trying to dismantle football for awhile now and I'm puzzled by it. The author seems to think of grown men, most college educated, as hapless, helpless victims. For myself, I they're near super human. Only a tiny percentage of men will ever be good enough to be pro and I think there will always be stiff competition for those roster spots, much to the chagrin of the author who seems to hope that football fades away over time because he doesn't like it. Anyway, attempted guilt trip aside, I think there's nothing wrong with enjoying football. What do you think?

poll on the way

Yeah, it's a left thing. USA Today and Yale Divinity School are hotbeds of the liberal agenda. All at work to undermine everything you consider great about America.

Well to be fair many of the college graduates got help passing courses, writing papers, and IIRC about half who play in the NFL even have a degree.

i won't mention the name, but it's a well known fact on my campus that a recent "graduate" used to get B's on papers in which he inserted "know what i'm sayin" every other line, from the grad student teachers who admired his football prowess. Most of the revenue sport athletes (basketball football hockey here) with a pipeline to a career that has NOTHING to do with academics also go into trash majors like sports management. This isn't even remotely a 'football factory' either. I can't imagine what's going on in the south

No, but it is boring as watching grass grow.

Seriously. Game play- a minute and ten seconds. Now stop play for two minutes to decide what to do in the next minute-ten. Repeat three times, commercial break, kick, resume.

I think you are being generous with those numbers.

It would be wise to remember that before our governments send kids off to war. Some retired NFL players pissed away their money on drugs and hookers and are using the concussion claims as a cash cow. Some are legit. Brain damaged veterans get nothing but a paltry check that they can't pay bills with.

brain damaged vets don't bring in millions though

except to halliburton and other no-bid contracters

I think you are being generous with those numbers.

It's a great game for kids, don't get me wrong. I liked it when my son played, lots of kids on the field, many breaks to refocus, positions for kids who aren't your natural athlete, but damn, at some point you need to learn to skate and really get competitive.

I think this knowledge is good to have and has helped in the past with rule changes on styles of tackling, protective gear, conditioning, etc. It's a rough sport.

That said, with all the knowledge available and these men still choose to play, that's there right and I can't see too many people of any political spectrum arguing that we should ban grown men from making grown decisions.

well no, i don't think it should be banned after a certain age, but the question was is it immoral to revel in these people bashing their brains in

thing is, i doubt this knowledge will help in any with reducing CTE, because the force of the impact is too great for any helmet in the foreseeable future to safeguard. If that day ever comes, the question of it being immoral will go away

It is immoral to watch non SEC football.

funny since we all know saint nick buys all his recruits

sec east was pretty goddamn intolerable to watch this year. Didn't your champ just lose badly at home to the 3rd place big-10 east team?

and didn't sec west runner up lose to a sun belt team? LOL

Isn't boxing/UFC worse?

Boxing is dangerous, even mroe so, for the same reasons football is. Repeated microconcussions. UFC, while dangerous, isn't AS dangerous because they don't receive as many microconcussions. You are able to take many more punches in boxing due to the gloves. On top of that you can be knocked senseless numerous times as long as you get up within 10 seconds.

In UFC/MMA the fight is stopped the INSTANT one of the fighters can't intelligently defend himself.

Boxing arguably is or is, at least, comparable. UFC/MMA, while it looks more brutal is actually likely "safer" (relatively speaking).

ufc is banned for minors and boxing might be too? Or at least i've never seen or heard of a minor who boxes

i really don't think it should be controversial, especially from the "think of the children" crowd, to put a stop to contact football. I can only think of dozens of things that are illegal for kids that are less dangerous

Spoken like a true hockey fan. Even the NHL is beginning to suck with all the OTO's. For me, the Vancouver Giants are a great show, but then I've always preferred major junior over the highly paid stars. These kids play with heart

Football (both types) is fun to watch, but then I remember I'm just looking at a bunch of millionaires and felons kicking/throwing a ball to each other and feel bad about myself and go outside and try to do something with my life. I'm always super glad when the season's over because it means I can be productive with my weekends.

And then I'm super excited when it starts back up again.

They do. I've been a junior hockey fan since forever. In Canada, junior hockey is like high-school football in Texas.
I follow CFL, sometimes. Actually had seasons tickets to the Lions for a few years, but honestly, in all major pro sports, there's nothing more boring than NFL.
Average NFL score is a CFL half-time.

If I do watch football, it is the Canadian game. I have always said that the NFL should adopt the larger field, it allows for some amazing plays like a 110 year return for a TD.

150 yds. by 65, yeah, you have a more exciting game than you have in a 120 by 50 hallway.
12 men works better, too.

Good lord no. But there's plenty wrong with the NFL.

Football is a game of human chess to me. Not every sport is constant play for entire quarters. There is a lot of strategy involved.
