How important YOU think it is. That can include how important is should be or how unimportant it should be.

I think honesty is important in all things and nobody should respect any politician who lies to them. Lots of people are idiots though and buy into the BS.

Would love to get some honesty, but that is nothing more than a pipe dream that will never happen.

Maybe. But more realistic than my dream to abolish political parties :)

So. I posted the question of honesty in politics on another site's forum and wanted to approach the discussion here.
How important is it? Has "honest politician" just become a joke that we laugh at because we don't want to think of the truth in it?
Do we really care about honesty at all?
How much chance would an honest politician have in today's campaign races?

It's the most important. To make educated decisions when electing officials, the People must know the truth. Unfortunately, American politics has nothing to do with the truth these days.

There is a funny thing about this.
When I look up honesty in politics (Google it I mean) the first several searches come up with the clear message of how important honesty is.
People will also say its important.
But then we talk about how unrealistic honesty is in politics.
Is it sad to anyone else that something so "important" is unrealistic?

It is, but the system has been captured by the Republocrat party mechanism, so there's no real force from the People to be able to correct it.

I don't know how important honesty is to a successful political career, but honesty is pretty damn important to me.

Q: How Important is Honesty in Politics?

Our system has become so corrupt that I don't even know how to interpret that question anymore.

Of course i care about honesty.

Of course politicians routinely lie. Some more than others.

The more honest a politician is, generally the more it seems to work against them. I think Rand Paul and Bernie Sanders are too honest for their own good. However, you could consider Trump to be an honest politician, and his form of honesty seems to be refreshing to some voters.

So i suppose it depends on what they're being honest about and why. President Clinton got a blowjob and tried to cover it up, yet somehow his polling numbers went up.

Speak for yourself please.

You're one of the few people then, the minority.

BTW, the OP asked us to speak in general terms as well, so find another thread if you don't want people speaking in wider terms.

I have been thinking the same thing. Say what you want about Trump but he appears to be honest, which is leaps and bounds above most. I'd rather know who I was voting for than listen to someone I know is lying and deceitful and can't say a damn thing without running it by their handlers first or issuing a retraction after the fact for something that didn't come out so well. If Trump were a deceitful liar he would just blow a bunch of sunshine up our asses instead of saying what he says.

It's a figure or speech...no big deal.

My point was you said

I tend to agree. It really depends on what you are willing to be forward about and not. I mean, look at Walter Mondale running against Reagan in the 80s. He was up front about the need that he truly belied there was to raise taxes...then he tanked.
This goes back to the people not really wanting the bad news and is probably what most politicians are not up front about (and probably because they learned this lesson over the years).

The reason politicians lie is because the average American does not want to face the truth.
