There's a huge difference between "drug possession" as you claimed, and what the statistics you posted say are "drug offenses" which include a hell of a lot more than just having a blunt in you pocket.

It includes drugs, not weapons. Only drugs, buying or selling. That is INSANE to arrest people for drugs. The country is waking up, aren't you?

Like I said, it ain't all a little pot.

Decriminalizing currently illegal drugs makes no sense, especially because it keeps cops 'too busy' as you said.

Nobody should go to jail for any drug. Of course it makes sense, we spend billions on the war on drugs that could be saved or diverted elsewhere. Cops don't pursue real crime because they constantly arrest people for nonsense, and the numbers bear that out

You feel it's okay to sell crack cocaine to elementary school or middle school or even high school kids? If that's waking up to your world view, I say no thank you.

Nobody sells drugs to elementary or middle school kids, that is propaganda from the 30s. If you are over 18, it should be legal to use any substance you wish, as long as no other crimes are committed. That is actual liberty.

I'm not going to participate in your thread derailment any further.

Start your own thread about what you're talking about, and I will be glad to go there and explain reality to you in detail.

You have no clue what reality is, I am sure you have never lived in the Netherlands, or any other country for that matter. Otherwise you'd be a lot more intelligent about this subject.

Excuse me, no derailment here. This is why diversion programs are NOT WORKING.

Moderator's Warning:
Yes it is a derailment. The OP: Prison diversion programs? (Support them, Yes or No?)

The topic is not how to incarcerate less people by arresting less people for non-violent crimes. Here or in other countries.

Please return to the topic at hand, or start a new thread with your topic. Thank you.

Yes they do in the real world.

One person who was in the program killed a Police Officer. The repercussions from this in my onion are purely political. There will be failures. There will be successes. The issue is to raise the success rate. That entails programs & followup.

I am for, it makes them easier to control while in because it gives them a goal. Also we have to lose the punishment mentality and understand that they will be getting out. If they still can't cope well in society because they have no skills or ability to correctly interact, it's a given that the rates of recidivism will be high.

It's cheaper to ensure there will be success upon release.

Far to many are for punishment, eventually many are released, if no rehab, what happens. We both know the answer.

while I understand the need for revenge from a human perspective and I understand that victims need to feel that justice was done, really they are the only one who should weigh in on the revenge theme

society does not benefit from mentally and emotionally further crippling someone's ability to return to society

I just finished reading a book called Orange The New Black...her crime was drug related and minimal and she was zero risk or threat to society but she was jailed at a massive cost to society...the stats in the States for non-violent crimes and the amount of money to incarcerate is massive...that reduces money that can be spent on rehabilitation. And if they just keep swinging them right back in there is no end to it.

I'm good with the theory, but I'd need to know the success rate before I make a final conclusion.
