Should USA Close Borders Completely?

Should USA Close Borders Completely?

Action for the sake of action is stupid.

Unless you can articulate a specific reason why a 5 year freeze specifically would be beneficial and necessary, there's no reason to do it.

Current immigration policy is completely incoherent, and Congress hasn't been able to agree on any reforms. This has made the problem worsen as far as illegals go.

It would hurt nothing.

Immigration is fantastic for innovation, it's neigh necessary. It would hurt the US to close its boarders.

How about a compromise?

Close the land border with Mexico only. Keep air travel to business as usual, and set up passenger ferry service in the Pacific and the Gulf. Some of the ferries can even carry cars.

As a permanent resident without a US passport this would leave me with no way of returning to the country for 5 years were I to leave at all (whether to see family in the UK, or to go skiing in Canada, or just to go on vacation somewhere) even though I have a job and an apartment and a car here.

So quite obviously I put this idea on the 'what are you crazy' category.

Is it time for the USofA to just close it's borders completely?
Maybe take a 5 year hiatus from taking in all immigrants and refugees, regardless of origin or background?

What if the borders closed completely for 5 years? What harm would there be?
Perhaps it'd give us time to get our collective crap together?

Nobody gets in, but people can leave if they'd like.

Would that be so terrible?

I can't see any upside to losing tourist revenue. That would have to happen if we closed our borders. And who the hell would we get to make our hockey teams great?

This assumes business as usual continues and there is no big Trump Wall to keep out the Mongolian hordes.

Which, while probably overkill, certainly beats the asshat in the White House who is pointedly ignoring established immigration law.

So there's no sense trying to keep more termites from entering your house if your house already has termites?

Maybe we could get a grip on our illegal immigration problems during the time of closed borders?

Tell that to the liberal idiots in power who don't give a damn about existing law, they figure they can just ignore it because it goes against their political ideology.

Lots of people like Trump are living in a dream world where they just wish for things and they happen like magic.

:lamo

I predict that won't happen in this case.

The entire political system is living in a dream world. It doesn't stop people from getting elected, unfortunately.

If I were you I'd throw my hands up an quit.

I'm just pointing out that this kind of irrational dreamy "if we just do this one thing, everything will be great!" thinking pervades a lot of political thought. Both the left and the right suffer greatly from it.

Are you being serious?

Did anyone say we should stop at this one thing?

Let's be honest, if we're not even willing to do what we already have on the books, we're sure not going to do this.

Even if we wanted to, we're incapable of doing so.

We just need to get friggin control of our borders. Legal immigration where all potential immigrants are vetted and take a citizenship test is fine. Just keep the illegals and the jihadists out.

It would hurt nothing.

It would hurt nothing? Really?

How about Miami and it's tourist industry of cruise ships, with no foreign people allowed in the US, this would hurt that industry a lot.

And on a whole, the money cities like New York gain from tourism is huge. It would also hurt the US airplane industry because the hundreds of thousands/millions of foreigners coming to the US on US planes or leaving on US planes would no longer be there.

And how about the money from foreign investors? Yes mister Kim, your money is welcome but you are not.

And that is only a few examples, there would be loads.

And no - this isn't a xenophobic thing.

This is a "our world is in turmoil, lets slam on the brakes for a minute and try to stabilize this thing before it really gets dangerous".

It's a "let's focus on our own issues first, and not try to solve all the world's problems when we obviously have our own things to deal with".

Fix America first, then try to help others.

The world is not in a whole lot more turmoil than it usually is. It's just high profile turmoil.

abolish all borders!!!

Never "Completely" because a society that prevents an influx of new blood becomes too insular and will begin to decline.

However, there should be rational immigration limits to prevent economic and social instability.

What a ridiculous idea.

So America now cowers in fear when a group of whackos in a desert go 'boo'?

Well, if it was done, then roughly $125 billion in foreign tourist spending in America goes bye bye. That is about $400 per American. $1600 for a family of four per year - $8,000 lost over five years.

Plus, the population would drop since American women only give birth to 1.9 children in their lives (you need roughly 2.2 to maintain a population I believe). So that means the GDP might start to drop during that time.

Plus, many countries are probably going to be none-too-pleased and might slap tariffs on imports/exports with America.

One thing is for certain..it will hurt the U.S. economy to some measurable extent. All because of a few nut job Jihadists?

What happened to American honor and bravery? Oh, it's cowering under the table.
