Should USA Close Borders Completely?

Should USA Close Borders Completely?

Would losing well over $1 trillion a year in money that international toruists spend in the United States be so bad?
US GDP is 16.7 trillion. Your $1 trillion figure seems to be for the entire tourism industry, the largest part of which is probably internal tourism. No one further says that closing the borders means closing for tourists. That's not what I got from the OP.

Go back and read the OP again. It talks about closing the USA's borders completely.
I know what it says. You know what it means but you chose to ignore it. Read the OP again: it mentions "immigrants and refugees", not tourists.

One thing I love about being an American is the visa free travel and reciprocity we have with many nations. We have trusted travel with other countries where you may be given a visa on arrival and in turn the US does this for others. You can still be turned away at the digression or laws of the other country so it isn't a free pass (if you are a felon or have a DUI conviction oftentimes you need to apply for a visa), but it is nice. In nearly all cases you are subject to having your items inspected, will need to go through an interview with a border immigration officer, be able to state your intended plan for travel and accommodations. You'll also need a valid passport. There is a process behind it all, and there are safeguards to prevent dangerous items or people from coming into the country. In today's world people travel for tourism, to visit friends and family around the globe, for business, and other legitimate reasons. Don't screw things up for the law-abiding people who are safe and wish to go from country to country. I could understand an argument required enhanced procedures for one to become a permanent resident of the US, but for the most part I don't think we need to make global travel harder than it is and if anything we should look for effective ways to streamline this.

In any case this isn't going to happen.

Since East Germany is the Republican's dream model for our Nation these days... rather than build the wall on the border, how about we wall off Red States.
Then we could let these Red States pay for themselves instead of being supported by Blue States.
And see how long the "anti-welfare" position holds out.

That's the point of the OP, to address that issue.

But it really won't address anything. Stopping legal immigration will have zero impact on people trying to immigrate illegally. We have what lots of people want, whether it's wealth or a good target for terrorism. If we can't even keep the criminals out now, what makes us think that shutting down legal immigration will stop anyone who wants to get in from getting in?

This is a "debate" forum, not a "we're gonna implement law" forum.

Nothing we talk about here changes anything. But talking about things is important.

This assumes business as usual continues and there is no big Trump Wall to keep out the Mongolian hordes.

Yeah, because we have no illegal immigrants or anything, right?

So there's no sense trying to keep more termites from entering your house if your house already has termites?

Maybe we could get a grip on our illegal immigration problems during the time of closed borders?

Talking about things which are bad ideas and will never happen is a waste of time.

Ah, still alive. Could you clarify your position on the tourism issue as this seems used as an excuse?

Lots of people like Trump are living in a dream world where they just wish for things and they happen like magic.

:lamo

I predict that won't happen in this case.

Countries like Hungary build fences and keep people out. People like you claim some simple large scale engineering is beyond the possibilities of a country that put people on the moon and that just because even with a fence maybe a few tens of illegals would still get in (work 99.999% of the time), it wouldn't work at all (0% of the time).

If I were you I'd throw my hands up an quit.

And no - this isn't a xenophobic thing.

This is a "our world is in turmoil, lets slam on the brakes for a minute and try to stabilize this thing before it really gets dangerous".

It's a "let's focus on our own issues first, and not try to solve all the world's problems when we obviously have our own things to deal with".

Fix America first, then try to help others.

No harm except the businesses that rely on foreign tourists for revenue and the businesses that rely on foreign workers.

No harm at all except millions in lost revenue.

No harm except the thousands of people who will lose their jobs and livelihoods.

No harm except the damage to the international reputation of the America.

No harm except to the founding principles of our nation.
Is that what you thought Trump meant, stop tourism? << I wish I could make this eye roll the size of an aircraft carrier. So Trump is going to cut his own throat, since he's in the tourism business? The founding principles in our Constitution say that Congress makes naturalization law.....not crackpot reporters, pundits or other stakeholders. If Congress stops immigration, then it's according to the Constitution.

I'm sick and tired of the ****ing name calling (xenophobic) and the trotting out of the "it's unAmerican" bull****. What's American is what we decide it is, and immigration policy has been controlled since the beginning. Anyone who thinks we have an obligation to allow high risk populations into our country is full of ****. There are people in this country who are purely political, who have no real interest in the welfare of this country. All they care about is directing power and controlling outcomes. Those people are traitors.

First, this poll is not a reflection of Trump's proposal. This poll would at least abide by the equal protection clause and apply the laws equally instead of Trump's proposal that would only apply to members of a specific religion because...**** you, that's why.

And if Congress chooses to limit itself by excluding muslims, then it is violating its own laws against anti-discrimination and the equal protection clause of the Constitution.
