Oscar Pistorius, the blade runner

Do you agree with the appeal court verdict of Murder?

Last year Oscar Pistorius was given a mere slap on the wrist for the shooting death of his girlfriend. He (according to himself) had heard something and shot the door of his bathroom because he thought a thief was hiding there. And even though he lived in a gated and very secure property, he thought that even through all that security a criminal had hidden himself in the bathroom rather than his live in girlfriend. A ridiculous explanation of course and on appeal his slap on the wrist judgement has been vacated and has been replaced with a murder conviction meaning that a lower court will have to decide how long Postorius has to spend in jail, but from what I understand there is a 15 year minimum for what he was convicted of.

So the question is, do you agree or disagree with the murder verdict of the appeals court?
 
I am still confused on how the case was presented to get this "slap on the wrist judgement." And even more confused how the appeals process works in South Africa that allows for one judge to overrule the sentence issued by another judge, which forces that lower judge to reissue a sentence based on the "crime determination" by the higher court.

It looks like this case is not headed back to a new trial, but rather back to the lower court judge to issue a new sentence based on Murder (originally it was Manslaughter, or their equivalent to that) which should sent Oscar Pistorius back to prison as he is now on house arrest.

Perhaps another DP'er can explain to us how the judicial system works there.
 
In my opinion the South African legal system is idiotic. My Lady. South Africa is a total hell hole. It seems that every second white South African has killed at least a couple of black South Africans and that doesnt seem to be a big deal at all. It seems that they dont even slow down for a black South African if they see one crossing the road - they just run them over. No big deal. So why should it be a big deal that a South African kills a hot white chick? South Africa is such a hell hole. Why on earth did people worship Nelson Mandela again? Oh thats right - because he allowed the west to rape the living hell out of it and do whatever we wanted to.

I agree that this guy murdered his girlfriend but I am sick to death of this story and the western mainstream media trying to make this another OJ thing. Who could even care less about this 'blade runner'? I wish media would shut the hell up about this. The media cares more about this than anyone else. Why would they go live to the sentencing or whatever? God I hate South Africa.

I think he very well knew he was killing his girlfriend and thus is a murderer so he doesn't get any sympathy from me. However, in principle I have a problem with overturning sentences and replacing them with tougher sentences. I just don't think a justice system should work that way.

What was wrong exactly? Nelson Mandela was a western puppet. Instead of nationalizing he allowed South Africa to be raped like crazy by the west and nothing has really improved. South Africa is terrible for blacks now. What did the loser do for them? Go to a Rugby match? And the South African legal system is retarded. So where am I going wrong South Africa expert? Please explain it to me.

I did not follow the case. I just saw it on the news.

So I cannot opine about what he is probably guilty of.

It's probably good it was overturned.

After this ruling, all you have to do to murder your significant other and get a slap on the wrists (relatively) is to wait until they get up one night to go to the bathroom and then shoot off a whole clip into the bathroom door...and just claim you thought it was an intruder.

Just make sure you do not get into an argument with the one you are about to kill anywhere near the night you shoot them. And if you can pretend for a few weeks/months beforehand that you two are getting along great (especially in public), even better for your case.


I personally do not buy that he thought it was an intruder. I think they got into a fight, he has a bad temper and he killed her in a rage.

You also clearly won't be able to help yourself think rationally about it either.

South Africa is messed up, but not for the reasons you listed, and we have a long way to go, starting with getting rid of the corrupt Bozo Zuma... but without Mandela South Africa would no longer exist.

I am not going to go into your claims about the South African legal system, for one reason is that I am not South African and do not have enough knowledge about it and the other reason is that is sounds and feels very far fetched and incorrect.

And this is not about the blade runner, this is about Reeva Steenkamp and the justice she finally got today. I do not care about Pistorius other than that I do not want another celebrity getting away with murder. This was a bit like OJ but only because his victims did not get justice either pure and simple. And I also do not care about how the media portrayed this either, the media sucks when it comes to celebrities. They either follow them slavishly or hate on them in a manner that is also horrendously.

All I am glad about is that this domestic violence murderer finally got his punishment and the parents of his victims got justice and peace of mind. Just like it was the worst for the families of OJ's victims.

Agree.

Your bathroom door is locked. Your girlfriend who was there all evening is suddenly not in any other room in the house, of course you've checked. Wouldn't the logical thing to do be to just knock on the bathroom door and say, "Is that you hon?"
 
I voted No, because I believe the first (black female by the way) judge made the correct judgement and from her statements it was clear that she correctly did not consider this to be a case of domestic violence but a tragic accident. That being said, I do not wholly disagree with the present judgement as it is also correct that he should have known firing several shots through a closed door in an enclosed space would have killed whoever he believed to be behind there.
