Re: Should all large and Medium US Airports have Lactation Rooms Nationwide?

Maybe the baby doesn't like the smell of the bathroom and therefore won't feed. Sorry but it's wrong to expect a woman to nurse in a place where germs abound like that.

What are the insides of these communal feeding chambers going to be like? [germ wise]

U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) introduced the Friendly Airports for Mothers (FAM) Act, a bill with bipartisan support that would require commercial airports to provide private lactation rooms for breastfeeding mothers in every terminal. "Finding a clean and private space to breastfeed or pump breast milk in an airport can be burdensome and stressful, if not impossible,” Duckworth wrote in an op-ed for the Chicago Sun Times. “It’s not uncommon for moms to be directed to a bathroom. We would never ask our fellow travelers to eat their meals in bathrooms stalls, yet we ask new mothers to feed their children while sitting on a toilet seat."

Duckworth's bill -- one that would have an effect at the national level -- comes at a time when politicians and citizens are working to make these mandates at the local level. Last year, California passed a law requiring airports to provide lactation rooms with chairs, electric outlets and, in the case of newly constructed terminals, sinks for mothers to wash their breast pumps. A similar bill passed both houses of the Illinois legislature earlier this month.

While women have the right to breastfeed in public in the U.S., this legislation would give nursing moms the option for a safe, clean and enclosed space if they wish to nurse or pump privately. In a November 2014 survey of 100 U.S. airports, 62 reported that they were "breastfeeding-friendly," yet only eight of them had private lactation rooms that met the minimum standards. Furthermore, two of these eight airports' lactation rooms were placed outside terminal security checkpoints.....snip~

Breastfeeding In Airports Is Miserable. These Women Are Aiming To Fix That.

What do you think, should All US Large and media Airports have lactations rooms? Also if they do this with Airports wont they have to do it with Train Stations? What say ye?

Interesting. I didn't nurse my kids so I don't know personally about the feelings of women who want a private place to nurse in airports but if you need one, this makes sense. It's better than a bathroom which is the only other "private" place I can think of in an airport.

It's a lot of money for people getting upset at breastfeeding mothers in public. Perhaps we can just save the cash and be OK with mothers feeding their kids in public.

The legislation and proposal has nothing to do with people who aren't okay with women who breastfeed in public. It's for the women who want a private place to breastfeed, which many do. Not all women are comfortable exposing any part of their breasts in public.

Mornin Ikari. :2wave: Well it is the law. I don't mind if the Airports do it themselves. But the bill does come with bi-partisanship agreement. Like I mentioned earlier. If they do it with Airports. They will need to do it with Train-Stations. Bus Stations too.

Re: Should all large and Medium US Airports have Lactation Rooms Nationwide?

So I have a solution - given the cost is "negligible," all those who are for this measure can be the ones who pay for it.

Well, if we're going to go that route, then I have a bunch of things I don't want to pay for at the airport anymore.

I don't use the wheelchairs and courtesy carts, so let the handicapped and old people pay for those.
I don't use the women's restrooms, or the toilets in the men's restrooms, so I don't need to pay for those.
I don't use the smoking room, or the little religious chapel, so I shouldn't have to pay for those.
I can do without the tram and the moving walkways, so I shouldn't be paying for those.
The fountain and all the plants are pointless, and I don't need them, so I don't want to pay for those either.
I don't mind using the stairs, so I don't want to pay for the elevators and escalators anymore.

Or, we could act like adults and recognize that in communal areas, we all pay for some things that we personally don't use, but other people do.
