Is it appropriate for a 12-year-old to use Twitter?

A far, far bigger question is what kind of sick **** sends anyone, let alone a twelve-year-old, death threats.

BTW I believe that online death/rape/other violence/etc. threats are not taken seriously enough by most law enforcement authorities. Malicious trolls know this and thus know that in most cases, they will be free to threaten with impunity.
BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT is the issue here.

This is exactly why parents should not allow their kids to use it. They should be told that if they did use social media they might get threats of all sorts.
I understand the need to protect our kids, but doesn't this put the onus on the victim?
No, I don't think so, the person who made the threat is at fault and should be punished if caught.
Would you make the same argument for rape? Women shouldn't drink/get drunk in public as that might cause their defenses to go down and open them up to bad actions from bad people.

Same argument, really, just different circumstances.

I don't see a problem with it. My son and his friends tweet each other. I know my sons account information. I know who he follows and what he says. He finds it fun. He'll check with me before following any public figures or things I would find questionable because he knows he'll lose his phone and laptop if he makes dumb choices. The problem isn't that the kid is on twitter, the problem is that the other morons threatening a 12 year old are on twitter.

yeah, i'd probably let my kid use Twitter. i would keep an eye on it, though.

Because they can get death threats, manipulated by adults posing as children and a bunch of nasty things. They are too young to be using it.

They can get death threats and be manipulated by adults posing as children when they play Xbox live, too. Did you start a poll asking people if it's appropriate for children to play Xbox live? Because most 12 year olds in this country have done it at least once.

I am not familiar with Xbox.

My kids aren't even going to have a cell phone much less a twitter account at age 12.

My kids play xbox, but have never been on Xbox Live. Nor will they until they're at least age 15.

It does not matter if it is or is not appropriate...if they want to use it, they will no matter what their parents say.

Only 12 year old mentalities use Twitter to start with, so not only is it appropriate, it's probably mandatory. See? That's what you get for asking...

Here we go with age standards again, so what should mommy and daddy government make the minimum age to use Twitter?

They have, already. Well, sort of.

Some years ago, a federal law was passed imposing strict standards as to how online sites could go about collecting information from, anyone under the age of thirteen,m and what must be done to protect the privacy of that information. Rather than bother with complying with all these restrictions, most of these sites have simply made it a policy that you aren't allowed on them unless you are thirteen or older.

If I had children, Twitter is the one services I would most want to strongly discourage. Them from using, not from a safety perspective, but because I would want my children to learn to think in better than 140-character-limited blurbs rife with horrendous illiteracy.

I h8 Cing idiots rit lik dis.

Ugh! Just writing that last sentence, I felt like dozens of IQ points were being sucked out of my brain. I do not use Twitter, and probably never will, for that reason, above all else. Seeing people write like stupid, illiterate retards annoys the hell of of me. And if I had children, I would certainly be very unhappy if I ever caught them writing in such a manner.

When I was that age, much better was expected of a 12-year-old than a Twitter-level of illiteracy and truncated thought.

Imagine the Magna Carta in 144 characters. If you can't sum it up in that space, we're not interested anymore.

I don't think anybody of any age should use Twitter.

Same with Facebook.

Smart phones too.

There are many places a 12 year old can encounter strangers. The internet is one place, the real world is another. If your 12 year old is interested in hanging out with strangers it is better that they do it on the internet. But if you let them know the danger of talking to strangers, you should also let them know that applies also to Twitter, because the people who are too creepy to go out in public are on Twitter. But you can't protect them from ever encountering another human being when you're not around. You have to prepare them, not just protect them. And at 12 they are (sometimes) old enough to be allowed some independence. Better to let them learn a lesson on twitter than to have them do it in the real world.

Greetings, Bob Blaylock. :2wave:

When I see young people today totally absorbed in Twitter, I imagine them in 20 years having very oversized thumbs because they use them constantly to send messages. It reminds me of the Brothers Grimm fairytale Rumplestiltskin, who had an oversized thumb because he used his to spin straw into gold on the spinning wheel. Now if we could get those Twitter users to learn the secret on how to do that, we have the answer on how to eliminate our $18 trillion dollar debt! We've got the straw, we've got the Twitter users, we've got a government that loves to spend money - all we need is the secret on how it's done and they'll have jobs for life, which also cuts down on unemployment costs! win-win!

*Hey, it's Saturday night and I'm sitting in front of a computer instead of out partying somewhere - don't blame me for this trip to fantasyland - I've heard worse from some politicians!* :lamo:
