They can get death threats and be manipulated by adults posing as children when they play Xbox live, too. Did you start a poll asking people if it's appropriate for children to play Xbox live? Because most 12 year olds in this country have done it at least once.

I am not familiar with Xbox.

My kids aren't even going to have a cell phone much less a twitter account at age 12.

My kids play xbox, but have never been on Xbox Live. Nor will they until they're at least age 15.

It does not matter if it is or is not appropriate...if they want to use it, they will no matter what their parents say.

Only 12 year old mentalities use Twitter to start with, so not only is it appropriate, it's probably mandatory. See? That's what you get for asking...

They have, already. Well, sort of.

Some years ago, a federal law was passed imposing strict standards as to how online sites could go about collecting information from, anyone under the age of thirteen,m and what must be done to protect the privacy of that information. Rather than bother with complying with all these restrictions, most of these sites have simply made it a policy that you aren't allowed on them unless you are thirteen or older.

If I had children, Twitter is the one services I would most want to strongly discourage. Them from using, not from a safety perspective, but because I would want my children to learn to think in better than 140-character-limited blurbs rife with horrendous illiteracy.

Ugh! Just writing that last sentence, I felt like dozens of IQ points were being sucked out of my brain. I do not use Twitter, and probably never will, for that reason, above all else. Seeing people write like stupid, illiterate retards annoys the hell of of me. And if I had children, I would certainly be very unhappy if I ever caught them writing in such a manner.

When I was that age, much better was expected of a 12-year-old than a Twitter-level of illiteracy and truncated thought.

Imagine the Magna Carta in 144 characters. If you can't sum it up in that space, we're not interested anymore.
